Any idea of how I go about tracing a family ancestor of Russian origin?

Kind Regards

Can you supply a little more information please?

For example, it would be helpful to know place/region (without which little will be possible except the most speculative enquiries), religion/ethnicity, when they left Russia etc etc. I'm sure you'll appreciate that there are so many variables, given the sheer size of Russia, the multinational nature of its former Imperial and Soviet empires etc.

I'm looking for information on my grandmother's Jewish grandparents who arrived at Liverpool around 1838 from Russian-ruled Poland.

Their name was Stargratt (many variants).

There is a family member named Deborah Suzanne Ward who may be able to help. Is Debbie out there?

Can anyone help link surnames with village/town origin in Poland? Or provide the possible original Polish spellings of the name Stargatt?

Also, I'd welcome any and all information about the causes of Jewish immigration into the UK from Russian-occupied Poland at that time.
