COMPLETED WITH THANKS Old photo dating and restoration please
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 01:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Could someone please date this photo and if possible take off the spots and restore her to her glory days. She is the worse for wear in years. Look forward to any assistance provided. The back of the photo card is included.

Kind regards

Thank you so  much  Katherine for the date ! Appreciate it.  :D

And Irene, that is so lovely thank you.  :D I guess the photo wasn't easy to work with. It does make a big difference without the spots, looks like rust?

Love it all. So appreciate your comments.

Hi Judi, well, the sleeve and the long bodice are typical of the frilly early 1870s, as is the chignon high on the head. The lady is wearing a bustle which went out of fashion in about 1875, so I'd place this photo between about 1872 and 1875.

But the back bothers me...it isn't typical.

I'd really like to see the whole card please Judi, uncropped. I need to see the corners, very important. Can do?

Cheers,
China

Thanks China,  ;) I will check the back, make sure it was sent with the correct photo and try to resize the back.   :-\Apparently I am not sending the photos in the correct dpi as well...furiously reading all the tech info provided by roots chat...big learning curve... :-[

Also sad I missed Carolyn's gorgeous sepia of previous thread until just this minute when I happened to go back. :'(       Didn't see notification of her input, or yours relating to it. Is that because I closed that thread?

Thanks for helping me.

Regards
Judi

No, not because you closed the thread...make sure you have "notify" switched on...and make sure your notifications aren't going into your junk mail, that's happened to me a couple of times.

If you are having these photos sent from somewhere else, please ask them to scan the entire photo and leave it uncropped. Don't include the scanner lid, of course :D

Ok, thanks again  for the information China.  ;D

The back does go with this photo, enclosed is how it came. It shows part of the edge only.

Cheers,  hope it works.  :(

Kind regards

Well...the photographer was at 2 Devonshire Place from 1864 to 1873, and as it's really not an 1860s style of dress I'd narrow the date range down from about 1871ish to 1873 :) He moved to a different address in New Cross early in 1873 but could have been using up old cardstock for a little while.

Cheers,
