Shrewsbury Street Primitive Methodist Chapel, Glossop.
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 23:01 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone lives nearby the above chapel.  The reason being is that I have found a snippet of a newspaper cutting in my family's papers, unfortunately no date or newspaper name.

It is the announcement of a death for a "Mrs Joshua Berry," service took place at the Shrewsbury Street PM Chapel, Glossop.

I am therefore wondering if there is a graveyard attached to the chapel, and if so, there maybe a grave.  Ideally, if some kind soul could take a pic with a digital camera and email it to me, I am intrigued to see who else is buried in there, and if they are related to me, as my surname is Berry, it is possible it is my Grandfathers side of the family.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.  Kind regards,  Tom.

Hi Tom.....

I have had a look at Shrewsbury Street Glossop on Google street view, and at the junction with Wren Nest Terrace there is what looks like to be a very large chapel, now modernised into what looks like a very nice house! If you go down Wren Nest Road by the side of the building there is no graveyard that I can make out.

Take a look for yourself!

Hi The Mc,

Thanks for your reply.  I did a bit of a google search, there is a pic of the chapel on an estate agents website, just looking at the front gates of the chapel, it looked as if there may be a pathway, made up of what could be flattened gravestones, but I could be wrong, its pretty hard to see really.  I will have a look on Street view, and see if there are any nearby cemeteries, knowing my luck, they will be massive! LOL.  ::)

I was born on Shrewsbury Street, the Chapel was called Shrewsbury Street Primitive Methodist, there is no graveyard. People were buried in the local Council graveyard on Cemetery Rd Glossop. Yes it is a large cemetery  cheers kath

I have been looking at notes of a Glossop Historian Robert Hamnett. He used to write articles in The Glossop Chronicle. he states that Shrewsbury St Chapel was opened on 24th October 1858. Included in the list of church trustees was Joshua Berry, shopkeeper, Edward Street Glossop. Edward Street is off Shrewsbury street. The newspaper you have is probably from the Glossop Chronicle, I hope this is of interest to you cheers Kath

Hi Kath,

Thank You so much for your posts, it means a lot.

Fantastic news!  Strangely enough, I spotted something on the net regarding a Joshua Berry, shopkeeper, edward street, glossop.  I thought it may have just been a coincidence, but I never knew he was a trustee of the chapel!  The newspaper cutting I have is just the top of the article, it does not have any further details regarding the service, date, or anything, so I didn't think I would get any info on it, how wrong was I????

All I have to do now is connect him to our family, the tricky bit!  I would love to be able to either get a photocopy of the article in full, to see what it consisted of, the problem I have is that I live nowhere near Glossop, Im down in Manchester. :'(  Would Glossop library be able to look it up for me, do you think?  I would pay for their time if required.

Thanks again, Tom.

the local library does hold micro fiche records, but they don't do research. Derbyshire County Council Record Office also have copies and also do paid research. but without dates of the article I am not sure how this will be done. cheers and good luck Kath

Joshua Berry was born in 1829 in Hollingworth, Cheshire. In 1855 he married Mary Beeley of Glossop, they had no children. Joshua Berry died in 1909, his will was published. You can buy a copy of it from derbyshire County Council. http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/records/wills/search_wills/default.asp?filterby=By_year_of_probate&filterValue=1909-1921  Mary Berry died in 1916 aged 87. Their home address was 52, High St East.
