Hi Amanda,

I gave them a ring. They do not have the burial plan for St Ives but what they have is a plan of the monuments (gravestones) in the cemetery. There is only one Dodds and he is not connected to the ones I am looking for. They did helpfully suggest I contact the church direct as they should still have the burial plans for the cemetery.

I will hold off for a while to see if I get any more replies to the emails i have sent to various people and I will also try to look at the electoral register for the area back then

Thank you for your help

David
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

My "French" family have had a lot of involvement with St. Ives since the late 1890's.

My great Uncle was a choir boy there many years ago and he knows for a fact that all of the registers survived a fire that occurred despite claims from the current vicar and county Durham records office, he has actually seen them.

He contacted Mr Heron direct and I called to his house, unfortunately I think it was of a hassle to help us and advised that there was no surviving registers I KNOW THAT THERE WAS and it is most frustrating.

I have just contacted them myself and the last time they updated their records was Oct 2005 so its well overdue.  I have asked for access or a copy to their databases I have to write into the Manager so I will keep you updated.

In the meantime I do visit quite regularly so I will have a good look round at the new stones (not on the council list) and see if I can find any Dodds.

Hi. I have just found this thread from a few years ago and am excited to see St Ives Leadgate come up in the conversation. I have been looking for the death/burial place for my great great grandparents for ages as have my mother, her cousin and her aunt. They were a mining family of Irish descent called Kennedy and they lived most of their adult lives at Iveston, mostly at 10 Redwells Hills Cottages. They were Hugh Kenney 1842-? and Dorothy nee fairless 1842-1918 and in 1911 they were living at 10 Redwells Cottage as was Dorothy on her death certificate. I have been told that St Ives is the closest church and therefore the one that they must be buried there but i haven't managed to get an address to contact. I will call the number on this thread and hope it is still live, it may tell me when Hugh died which is still a mystery although Dorothy was a widow in 1918. If anyone has come across a grave for either of them I would love to know, mum and Marcia are in their 80s and have been looking without the advantage of the internet for over 50 years!

St. Ives, Leadgate is not a parish that seems to have been transcribed/filmed by any outside organization, certainly not by familysearch.org/Genealogical Society of Utah. The local Roman Catholic Church, Our Blessed Lady and St. Joseph, Broom has been filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah. St. Ives records which are current should be available at the church and older ones at the  Durham Record Office.

Hi.
Thank you for your response, the Durham Records Office came up trumps.
I tried the phone number that someone mentioned, that local council has now merged with Durham and there was no response but the Durham Council Records Office located my great great grandfather, his death had been wrongly recorded by both surname and date of birth so I would never have found it.

Thank you for your help

Hello Alison

Hugh and Dorothy are my great grand-parents. I remember visiting their grave at St. Ives Church in Leadgate sometime in the 80's, long before I became interested in family history. I didn't note any details at the time and recently I have been trying to track down the date of death of Hugh but without success. Please tell me the surname his death was recorded under and any other details you have. My branch of the family comes through their daughter Eliza Jane. Many thanks.

HI. Good timing I have just taken a break from work and thought I would spend a few minutes doing some family history.
Hugh was registered as Hugh Condy which is why it is impossible to find. In the end the Durham records office helped me and now but I have his death certificate and Dorothy's and their marriage certificate. You are welcome to copies if you want to send me your e-mail. I am on  (*)
I would love to share any other information if you would like to .

Hello again. That makes sense. My aunt said their surname was changed when they came from Ireland and she mentioned Condy. So it looks as if his death may have been recorded against his birth surname (I'm not sure if this is correct). I've sent you a personal message which should contain my email address and I'd be very pleased to receive a copy of his death certificate. We already have the marriage certificate of Hugh and Dorothy (under the names of Kennedy and Fairless).

All the best

Mavis

Hi Mavis
I can't see your e-mail on the message but I haven't used Rootschat much and may be staring at it.
I can't believe that you have heard the name Condy before! We thought it was a mis print. Mum's cousin picked up her mother's family research and carried on over 40 years ago and they haven't managed to find the connection to Ireland apart from Dungannon never mind the change of name.
