Trying to locate where my great great grandfather is buried
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 19:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
I am holidaying near Merthyr Tydfil in the summer and hope to use the time to locate my great great grandfathers grave and pay my respects. He died September 1932 aged 73. His name is Richard Button and the reference for the certificate is 11a 587 Merthyr T.

I don't know the area at all and would like to narrow the search down a bit before I arrive. Do you have a service like we have in Kent where you contact the council with the information and they give you a grave number and location, if so could you give me their contact details.

Is there more than  one possible burial site for the area ? The last know address I have for him is from the 1911 census  which is 20 Commercial Street Ystrad Mynach in the parish of Gettigaer.

Any help with this matter is greatfully received as it will be so nice to close a chapter on a very elusive relative that I have taken 10 years to trace :o

Hi

Just in a general sense - many councils require the actual date of death to enable them to give you those details

Also - a lot of councils make a charge for searching if they have have several cemetaries in their area

Thanks for the link, I had found it and it helps eliminate some of the more recent locations but I as hoping to get a more detailed service from the council, I'm obviously spoilt in Kent ;D ;D

I will send for the actual certificate as this might narrow down the search area.
Do you know if the newspapers are available to search in the local library? If so I will search these as well when I get there on holiday.
Thanks for your help everyone.

Hello Panda  :)

Merthyr Library has newspapers from 1832 onwards at The Local Studies Department, based  on the Reference floor of the Central Library.

Kind Regards
Morgan

Thanks Morgan
I have sent off for the certificate, when I get the actual date of death I will contact the library to see if they can locate any information regarding where he is buried for me.

If he lived in Ystrad Mynach, this would come under Caerphilly County Council now, and their burials are online.

If you call 01443 815588, and ask to be put through to Burials, they will look this up for you.

The death would have been registered in Merthyr Tydfil, but I wouldn't have thought he'd have been buried there if he lived in Ystrad Mynach (Gelligaer).  There are a few Churchyards around Ystrad.

If you find it, and can't get there before you go home, I'd be happy to photograph the headstone for you, if there is one.

Hi Welsh Girl
Thank you for the information, I must admit my Welsh geography is not what it should be. Hopefully the certificate will have a more up to date address for him I will let you know what information I get next week when the cert arrives (what this space!!!)

You won't need the exact date of death, as long as you know the quarter/year, they'll search their database for you.  it'll be nice for you to have the certificate, but don't wait for it - call them anyway.

Commercial Street is the main street going through Ystrad, and there is a VERY large Churchyard close by - I wouldn't mind betting he's in there.

Merthyr is only the registration district .. it's easy to get confuesd :)

Glad to be of help.
