Registration in Hebrew name
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 01:15 GMT (UK) »
If a Jewish boy was born in 1840-1841 would it have been possible to register his birth using only his Hebrew name? I´m afraid I don´t have any idea what that Hebrew name could have been.

Hello,
Jewish children at birth were identified by their given name and father's name only.
for instance,  if a boy was named  Moshe,  he would be recorded as Moshe, son of David.
The surname was frequently omitted from the records.
It is the same with death records, it is common to omit the surname from Jewish headstones.

Do you have a location of birth and given name of the son and father?

cheers
eglus

Hello eglus, thank you for your reply. I am researching my auntie´s (my  father´s sister in law) family tree. Her grandfather was Robert John Steinson born 1840 or 1841 in Croydon but I can find no record of his birth. He changed his surname to Steinson Castle then just Castle. He died in 1871. His grandson, my auntie´s father, wasn´t keen on being told he looked Jewish, I don´t know how much he knew about his grandfather as his mother died while he was still young. That´s all I have to go on really. However interesting family research is it does cause a lot of speculation and head scratching!

Hello,
If you are sure they were jewish there may be records held at the nearest Synagogue at that time to their place of residence, you could request a look up in their archives for a record of a bris 1840-1841.  This would have occured when Robert John was 8 days old, or thereabouts.  that record would give you his hebrew name and parents details.
Good luck  :)

Do you have details of his father (and any witnesses) from the marriage certificate?

Have you found him in census entries before 1861 (when I see he was lodging in Baldock: RG9/816/40/25)?

Are you absolutely sure he was born STEINSON? There are no STEINSON BMD events at all in Croydon in 1837-1861.

In the 1861 census I referred to in the previous reply his surname looks like (and appears on some indexes as) STIMSON.  I notice that in 1841 there was a Robert STIMPSON aged 2 living in Croydon with parents Henry and Hannah: HO107/1078/7/48/26.
