Have you considered that the person may not have died in Scotland at all?  Many Scottish headstones record the deaths of family members who have died and been buried elsewhere - a bit like a memorial rather than a grave marker.

I, too have tried Scotlands People, too not much luck either.
I don't  know the Christian name, so.....

Have you seen the actual headstone or transcription? The Tough M.I's have been recorded & published. Perhaps there are places named on it? You could then look up the 1901 census for the Mitchells

Haveyou tried the Borders Family History Society.  They are currently and have lists and photos of gravestone etc.  Do not know how it works, whether you have to join, how much, if you have to pay for the info and photos. Probably, as they are doing this voluntarily and all they do is recover their costs or part of.

Whats the bit of Scotland under Edinburgh but along the coast before Jedburgh etc. up towards Tough.

I wish I could remember what they said when I took a look.  Ah! well ::)

Well I think that is the "Borders" area, but Aberdeenshire is way up above Edinburgh, so not covered by the Borders.  :)
