John Joseph Burke-Born Clonmel-Lived in London
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 21:18 GMT (UK) »
I am researching one of my grandfathers, John Joseph Burke, but am not making too much headway. The loose facts I have so far are as follows:
Born c1873 Clonmel Co Tipperary Ireland.
Married Ada Maria Britton c1906. Came to England around same time.
Had seven children: Kathleen, Eileen,Marjorie, Gladys, Rose,Winifred, Albert.
Possibly a member of the territorial army, 20th County of London Regiment.
Worked as a 'catering establishment doorman' (Commissionaire)
Died 1927 Fulham London.

I am particularly interested in his parentage, his army and civilian careers.

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

There's  a possible marriage for John and Ada in Fulham on FreeBMD :

 Marriage : Mar 1910
 Registration District : Fulham
 Volume : 1a / Page : 556
 Ada Maria Britton
 John Joseph Burke

A marriage cert would give you father's names and occupations and help your search.

If John Joseph was living in Clonmel prior to coming to England, then this is the only John Burke in the 1901 census b c 1873 and single:

Many thanks Elwy and Shane

Yes, that is the correct marriage date. I got it wrong in my posting, partly because in their 1911 census they claimed to have been married 7 years, possibly because they had several children by then (naughty). I have a copy of the marriage cert and father is shown as John Burke - deceased - occupation farmer.

Therefore the info Elwyn has come up with is very promising. The DOB of JJB is about right, he was I believe still in Ireland at that time and father shown as labourer is not a million miles from farmer.

Lets hope smeone can shed light on the military angle in England.

Thanks - John
