St Mary the Virgin Dover, BARTON
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 15:27 GMT (UK) »
I'd be very grateful for any information about John Barton, born/baptised 1788. I am trying to establish whether he is the father of John Barton (b 1811, married Charlotte Johncock Hatton in Buckland-by-Dover in 1837). I believe the dob is correct, but there are several John Bartons with this dob.

Any help gratefully received, as I live in Gloucestershire, and trips to Kent are difficult.

Quite possibly this is John's dob (John married to Charlotte, that is) - all I have is 'abt 1811'. He had younger brothers and sisters - Elizabeth, Stephen. William, Mary. Where in Folkestone was he christened, do you know?

It would be the parish church .............. that was the only one in Folkestone at the time.

John BARTON = Ann with the following likely children all baptised Folkestone http://www.familysearch.org

John 1811
Elizabeth 1814
William 1815 (buried 1816)
Stephen 1817 m 1) Jane Wood Formage at Lambeth 1841 2)Frances Mary Flavan at Folkestone 1860
Mary Ann 1820
Jane 1822 (buried 1825)
Charlotte 1824 (buried 1829)
Sarah Jane 1826 m James Brown at Faversham 1848

I'm not sure yet where the parents are in 1841 ............... whether they are the ones in Dover/deaceased or what?

Thanks for this list - it matches mine, so we've got the right family. It is their parents I'm stuck on!

Ah, I thought this rang a bell!  Didn't we decide he was the John BARTON bc1788 in East Peckham http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,398819.0.html ???

I can't see where Dover St Mary comes into the picture really :-\

Why did we decide it was John Barton of East Peckham? There were a number of John Bartons - and a relative of mine has challenged me with the notion that it might be JB of Dover St Mary's. John Barton of East Peckham is John Dennis Barton - and we have no instances of 'Dennis' as a family name. Wheras JB of Dover was married to Frances, and Frances appears as a name in the family...

Is there a way of establishing the East Peckham connection, do you think?

Because you were looking for a wheelwright and that is the one who was a wheelwright, his wife is Ann, his children in the census match those found in the Folkestone baptisms and he is living in Charlton by Dover same as your John junior at some point before moving back to Folkestone.

Quote
1861 - Belle Vue Fields, Peter St, Folkestone

John BARTON lodger mar 74 wheelwright b.East Peckham Kent
Ann wife 77 dressmaker b.Dymchurch Kent
Elizabeth dau 46 dressmaker b.Dymchurch Kent

RG9/551 folio 206 page 389
......................

1851 - Bridge Street, Charlton nr Dover

John BARTON head mar 63 wheelwright b.East Peckham Kent
Ann wife 63 b.Hawkins (Hawkinge?) Kent
Elizabeth dau 30 dressmaker b.Folkestone Kent
Mary Ann HORTON?? dau wid 27 b.Folkestone
John GREENLAND?? visitor 12 b.Folkestone

HO107/1632 folio 164 page 12
.................

1841 - Bridge St, Charlton nr Dover, Kent

John BARTON 50 wheelwright b.Kent
Ann 50 b.Kent
Elizabeth 25 dressmaker b.Kent
Mary 20 dressmaker b.Kent
Sarah 12 b.Kent
/
Elizabeth BOWLES 80 b.Kent

Well you could get the will of the John BARTON gentleman/proprietor of houses living in Dover/Buckland to see if he mentions his children (wife Elizabeth is executor) but I do feel it would be a waste of money.  As far as I can see he married Ann STOKES and was having a couple of children with the middle name of STOKES in Dover at the same time John and ANN (the wheelwright) were having children baptised in Folkestone.

John Dennis BARTON was baptised in Hadlow (not East Peckham) though it is near .............. has anybody actually searched the parish registers of East Peckham for a baptism for John ???
