Civil War Pensions
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 12:50 GMT (UK) »
I have found a record of a civil war pension for a Greenleaf Celdon Rogers. Can anyone tell me how to get further information on the pension records or service of said person? His wife Laura must have received a widows pension following his death. It seems this was in Colorado, but am unable to find any trace of Greenleaf or his wife Laura on the census. I know that his son Frank Celdon Rogers was born in Midland Michigan 1871, so Colorado is a mystery. No record of them on the 1870 census. This is a real brick wall. Any help appreciate.
Thanks Jen

Could this be him?

Greenlief or Greenleaf C. Rogers, residing Dover, Maine, enlisted at age 22 on 28 May 1861 as a private, served in Maine, enlisted in Company D, Maine 2nd Infantry Regiment on 28 May 1861, received a disability discharge from Company D, 2nd Infantry Regiment Maine on 21 Nov. 1862, enlisted in Company K, Maine 31st Infantry Regiment on 29 Apr. 1864 as a private at age 24, discharged from Company K, 31st Infantry Regiment Maine on 7 Aug. 1865 as a private, and survived the war.

The pension index mentions the Maine infantries, so looks like that's your guy.

On an index of deceased Union soldiers' headstones, there is a Greenleaf C. Rogers of Company D, Maine 2nd Infantry Regiment buried at or near Midland, Mich.

Wow, that is exciting. Thank you so much. Do you think there is more to get on his record or would that be all. Are you able to share the sources of this information?
Man, many thanks,Jen

It's from a subscription site.   :)  There are some Civil War links here, so you can see what's available online:  http://www.militaryindexes.com/civilwar/

Looks like you may be able to find some information about Maine on these sites:

On www.familysearch.org, there's a Greenwood Calvin Rogers born 17 May 1838 in Maine.  That seems to fit the age on the headstone.

Many thanks to Ohio Susan and Shelley esq. That certainly looks like Greenleaf but what are your thoughts on the discrepancy in names? (His wife was called Laura Bernice, by the way. On the pension document it says McDonald but on other places Bernice Ross!) It definitely calls him Greenleaf Celdon on the pension doc.
