Greenhill marriage and birth Abernethy
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 07:13 GMT (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters

I am hoping someone can help me find my missing ancestors marriage and birth.
I have searched Scotlands people and  other sites extensively, for the marriage of Laurence GREENHILL b. 1828 in Abernethy and Betsy CRERER b. 1827 in Dundee.  According to their youngest daughter Elsie's birth certificate they were married 11 November 1852 at Abernethy, but I cannot find this marriage  ???  They had 6 children between 1854 and 1864 in Abernethy, so I would assume  :P they married  ???
I am trying to establish that Betsy CRERER's  parents were John CRERER and Margaret JARRAN.  ( I have this baptism)
I have also have been unable to find their eldest daughter's Janet GREENHILL  birth/baptism abt 1854 at Abernethy, despite searching many different options such as Janet CRERAR.  I do note that in the 1871 census Janet GREENHILL is listed with her mother Betsy and siblings but the name CUAS is used, but it looks to be mistranscribed.
Janet married William LOUDEN and migrated to Australia in 1888 and her mother and some siblings  followed soon after with the others emigrating to Seattle, USA.
Betsy GREENHILL (CRERER) died in Corryong, Victoria Australia in 9/1893 and Laurence GREENHILL died in 1/1898 in Abernethy.  I was hoping that someone might know if all the old parish records from Abernethy are available or have another idea of where to search  :)
Many thanks for any assistance

Beamer

Dear Beamer,

I am also researching the Greenhills from Abernethy.  I don't have Laurence and Betsy's M.C. but I have the details from Betsy's B.C. (1827), Laurence/Lawrence's B.C. (1828),  Elsie's B.C (1864).as well as her older brother Thomas (born 28.7.1855 at Abernethy.  Thomas' details also mention that his parents Laurence and Betsy Greenhill (m.s.Crarar) were married at Abernethy in 1852. They also mention Betsy was born at Chapelshade, Dundee and that Thomas was her second child.

I also think that the 1871 census for Betsey "CUAS" is probably mistranscribed and is indeed 'our' Betsey.  The children's names and order are correct.  Thomas is missing, but I think I have found him Salmon fishing with Laurence  in the 1871 Census.

I hope this is of help to you.  I have quite a bit of  Greenhill history -so if you would like more information, please contact me.

Cheers,

Meelin

Just to throw something else into the pot here. My great great grand aunt married Laurences twin William in about 1849. This is not a line I've been investigating too much so don't, as yet, have exact dates. William b. 1828 d.1881 wife Ann b. 1830 d.1897. He was also a salmon fisherman. I don't know how much fishing he did but he did have a hand in producing 12 offspring so I guess Ann didn't suffer much from PMS!
It's also interesting to note they produced twins too.

Unfortunately I imagine the birth and marriage simply werent recorded, many of my ancestors were not recorded simply as they it was not yet mandatory, which is really annoying but just one of those things!  I think you just have to assume they were married, no reason to think otherwise.

I do have some connection to the Abernethy Greenhills as well through marriage but its the Sandilands and McNaughtons of Abernethy that are my real interest  :)
McIntyre and MacInnes, Argyll (mostly Glencoe, Ballachulish, Oban)
McGillivray, Robertson - Sleat, Skye
Sandilands, McNaughton - Abernethy, Perthshire
McCartney - Glasgow, Northern Ireland
Rafferty - Northern Ireland
Doig - Fife

I am related to the Ann and William referred to my x2 grandparents.
Not sure what that adds to the story.
One thing I can tell you is that Lawrence does not have a marked grave in Abernethy, have spent the morning looking for my recent Greenhill relatives - only 2 graves in the whole cemetery with their names on.
John Sandilands and his wife Euphemia Greenhill (william and ann daughter) are commemorated. Aunty Fame as my Mum knew her was a kindly soul - so, nice to see her memorial.

Hi Beamer,

Janet was named Janet Jackson Greenhill (married name Louden) and was buried in Barnawartha Cemetery in Victoria, with her husband William (and sadly, two of their 8 children, who died young).

I hope that is a helpful link to her Australian descendents.
