getting a copy of a will
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 03:56 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please help me. I'd like to know how I go about getting a copy of a will. I have found the probate notice for Manchester dated February 23rd (I assume 1924) stating that John Thomas Mobey died November 29th 1923. But I don't know what to do with info, I had found another probate notice for another ancestor, but it had a link for ordering a copy of the will there on the page (Cheshire archives)

I think all the information is on here:

http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

As you already have his date of death and probate date, then you can just make a written application to York, but read all the notes first.  The cost is five pounds.

Postal Searches and Copies Department
York Probate Sub-Registry
1st Floor, Castle Chambers
Clifford Street
York YO1 9RG

This postal address is for wills and grants of administration from 1858 onwards.  Before this date they are  held at various places.

Exactly as Mo said but would make sure you tick the " Grant of probate " box as well. As some time you get a little more info with that.
As some probate record index are now on line, i tend to send a copy of that with my application form.
Not to sure but i think it has speed-ed up my request?

Thanks Mo and Migky. I'll print that form up and send if off (once I get in international cheque) I re-read the info I had and realized the year for the probate was at the top of the page doh! so I don't have to assume anything now.
