Help DATING photos, please - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 11 February 11 16:51 GMT (UK) »
Amongst the old photos I have inherited is a one that I believe is of my great-grandmother, born in 1857.  This is it, showing the front and back of the photo.  I have another photo which I think could be of the same person, but taken a number of years later.  I'll add that photo separately to this post (as I can't seem to attach more than two images). Both are wearing the same necklace and earrings, and look similar.

I’d be grateful for any help with dating the photos.  Do others think they might be the same person?  Thanks,

Ian

Think it's definitely the same lady, ears, eyes, (and jewellery!) match.

The expert daters will be along soon to say whether they think the portraits are 10 years or so apart.

Well I've had a looooong look at these & come to the conclusion that these were taken early - mid 1880's.
The cardstock is identical ( but different suppliers) & was used at this time (design changed slightly from this around mid decade).
The long bodice in the 2nd. was popular late 1870's - early 1880's as was this pose against the back of a chair.
This may be 1880 as I believe that's what the date code says but I'm not 100% sure.
So only 5 years between them max. & I don't think they are the same person anyway as they have different eyes, nose & mouth.
Possibly mother & daughter.

I agree with Jim, different ladies, perhaps if only 5 years apart could be mother and daughter.  A comparison of heads, which I have found useful in the past.

Agree with Jim on the date, early 1880s possibly late 1870s especially with those fussy sleeves on the older lady. And they are definitely different people...I'd also think mother and daughter. The daughter will, I suppose, inherit the jewels. They look very intricate don't they...also very heavy. Pierced ears and heavy gold earrings swinging freely with the slightest motion....your earlobes get very sore very quickly and the skin gets irritated and itchy. I sympathize :D

What about sisters - one of them borrowed the jewellery off the other?

I think they look very alike. I even wondered if the second one is the same girl a few years later, perhaps pregnant, with a bit more weight and fluid retention?
Her dress doesn't sit very flat at the front? I wonder.

Just throwing ideas out there!

I thought the 2nd. was late 1870's but the cardstock's wrong for the date & the MIP has "" which is later than 1879 but not by much.
