Holian Surname in Mayo
« on: Friday 11 February 11 00:34 GMT (UK) »
I am researching Holian family connections in Mayo and am stuck. I'm trying to find any info (including, but not limited to a marriage certificate and parents names) on Bridget [Kilkenny] Holian (b.1832-d.1907) and Austin Holian (b.1825-d.1898).

I know that Austin Holian was from Oughaval, Mayo, but he and Bridget moved to Ballidine, Mayo before they started to have children. Their children that I have found birth records for are: Mary (b. 1864), Peter (b.1866) and Austin (b.1876).

Any help in tracking down info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to rootschat  :)

To begin with I am just asking about your dates re deaths for Austin and Bridget.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
has a death for Austin - 1904 and Bridget 1903. Both these have the same birth years as your family and are in Claremorris district.

If they are yours- they are included in 1901 census with a son John

Could these be your family?

Thank you so much for your help!

My dad gave me their death dates, but is not sure if they are correct. So, those are possibly them, but they would have been in their mid-70's in 1901 if still alive. I have noticed that dates and ages seem to fluctuate quite a bit from source to source  ;) This can be so frustrating at times - the only things that I have been able to find with both their names is the birth records for Peter, Mary and Austin.

Thanks again!!! You have given me more to look into  :D

It's a pleasure. :)
Yes ages do fluctuate and according to FS there is no other Austin Holian death. Perhaps the place may ring a bell and you could always send for certificates.
Ellis Island site http://www.ellisisland.org/ seems to have a couple of emigrations of John Holian's children to a relative in USA. When you are sorted they may be useful.
best wishes
heywood :)

You are right!!! I double check my records and compared them to my parents and you were absolutely right on both counts (deaths and the census)! Thank you so much! The next challenge is finding Bridget or Austin's parents  ;)

Hopefully, you may get some information from your other thread re the Kilkennys.

It is difficult to search Griffiths Valuation not knowing Austin's father's name and there is no Austin Holian in that record.
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php         or
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

You say you know that Austin was from Oughaval - is this documented? This may help.

According to Family Search - Ballindine registers only date from 1872. :-\

Hi.  I am reposting this, as I do not see it logged on the Forum.............because I happen to have a handwritten family tree from 1979 ) and I believe that Austin Holian's parents were Patrick Holian and Ellen Tarpey. I don't have dates but their children were Austin, Mary, Nellie and another girl who married someone named Murphy in England and her descendants are unknown.  Now I 'm not sure what happens next or if you want the rest of the info I have and how I would get it to you, without posting it all on this website ???
