1861 census look up FELIX LAKER please
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 16:04 GMT (UK) »
I can't find FELIX LAKER in 1861. He was born in 1842 West Grinstead, Sussex and would have been unmarried at the time and aged 18 or 19.
I've tried variations on the spellings but have had no luck. He was in W.Grinstead with his family in 1851 and then married & living in Thakeham in 1871 so where was he hiding in 1861 ??
Can anyone help me please ???
Thankyou for your time.

I think that your Felix Laker was a footman in Paddington.

RG9  Piece11  F 93  Pg. 3            106 Westbourne Terrace.

Felix Laker   age 17   Footman    b. West Grinstead
He was transcribed as Albert

Hi, Yes I found him but Felix did have a brother called Albert who was only a year younger so I assumed that would be him.
On the original census it clearly says Albert - I thought if the writing for 'Felix' was unclear it could have been mis-transcribed and they just guessed at it being Albert.
Hmmmm not sure what to think now.
Thanks for looking though.

No I too cannot find him. mind you saying that I cannot find an Albert either. Was Felix definately on it? Could he have been out of the country - perhaps in the forces?.could the name be wrongly transcribed? Some people mistrusted the census and made sure they did not go on it - or even gave a different name.

pejay
There was an Albert  he was born in 1844(3) according to BMD.

Felix was born 1882(3)

Still can't find Felix in 1861. I looked under Criminal records , nothing there.

This is bugging me so will keep trying.

Hi, Felix was born in 1842 not 1882.

I suppose he may have just not been on the census. I don't think he was in the forces.

pejay ... if you look on Genes Reunited and tap in Albert Laker b.1844 he comes up in 1861 - he was a footman in the household of Henry Benjamin Walmsley who was a maltster. So that's Felix's younger brother found but I wish I could find Felix !!
