Can anyone advise me please where I may apply to in order to make a postal application in order to buy a copy of a baptism entry in the parish registers for St Mary's, Newington, Surrey.

Many thanks for the advice. I tried phoning the Surrey Records Office to make enquiries but they couldn't find any mention of a Newington in Surrey so I wasn't sure where to try next!

If you are looking before 1906, then images of the St Mary Newington baptism registers are in the LMA collection on Ancestry.

Most local libraries have the Library Edition and you can access the records from there.

'METROPOLITAN SURREY

London’s growth became ever more rapid at the beginning of the C19th. Between 1889 when the London County Council was formed and 1965 when Greater London was created, London formally absorbed parts of the surrounding counties including major parts of north Surrey.
By 1900 the areas of historic Surrey then part of the County of London were

Battersea, Bermondsey, Camberwell, Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth

In 1965 more areas of Surrey became part of Greater London (with Battersea, Bermondsey and Camberwell merging with Southwark and Wandsworth)

Croydon, Kingston, Lambeth, Merton Richmond, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth

Many of the records for these areas of ‘Metropolitan’ Surrey are held at the London Metropolitan Archives and the archives of the local London boroughs south of the river Thames.'

Thank you for that information which I found of great interest. This is the first time that my research has taken me to this area & so this new information is most welcome.

St. Marys Church, Newington is in fact on Kennington Park Road (London SE11 or 17).  The church was heavily bombed during WW2 and all that is left of the original church is the Tower, with a new church added in the 50/60's.

If you look at a map of London, find Kennington Park Road, go towards the Elephant & Castle end and look for Penton Place (on the right side of the road looking down on the map) the church is also on the right side of the road and would be just before the Penton Place /Kennington Park Road junction.

The do have an entry on the Church of England website and there is a small picture.

Just google  St. Marys Church, Newington and the CoE site will come up and there is a small picture of the church.

Thanks for the info about the old church tower still being a part of the present day church, that's very interesting.
