Poland, help getting started. KLIMASIEFSKI
« on: Thursday 10 February 11 09:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping to research some relatives that came from Poland, but have no idea how or where to start, partially because of the language barrier and also because I only have a little information.

Joseph Klimasiefski (b 1917) and his siblings Charles, Lucy and William were born in Renfrewshire Scotland. I am searching for details on there parents but do not even know their names. I know they moved from Poland and arrived in Scotland after 1901 (as they do not appear in the census) and before 1917, so it was probably migration due to the first world war. I believe the father was born in Poland but the Mother was born in Austria and Moved to Poland.

The spelling of the last name may have been different in Poland as well so I know it's a long shot. If anyone can give me a head start or clues into the best way to research Poland ancestry, it would be much appreciated.

In most cases in Europe you need to figure out where people are from more exactly, because the records are probably in regional archives and depending on shifting boundaries sometimes where people considered themselves from is not the same as where m

The first thing would be to get more information from Scotland. Get Joseph's birth certificate (do you know if the other children were older or younger?), which . You might find a marriage in Scotland for his parents, and should look for their deaths there as well, see www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

This should at least get you the parents of Joseph and possibly info about another generation back depending on what records you find. At this point you can then start looking for the origins of the immigrant ancestors.

(There is a polish name, Klimaszewski, which does appear in records in the UK including this mention in Scotland, in case the name/occupation/location rings any bells: http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/16578/pages/408 )

From experience , may I point out a little possibility..
the border of Poland and Ukraine has shifted many many times ...about 37 miles of Ukraine became Poland - and then Poland became Ukraine...so you MAY have to take into consideration that his father  was born Ukraine at the time ...my own Father in law was born in Rogatyn  ....Ukraine....which was Poland 9 years before his birth....hope I haven`t led you astray, but just in case you get a little lost, don`t discount a Ukraine birth for Josephs father

Thanks for both your replies. As yet I have had no luck with the Klimasiefski last name beyond the scottish records, and with Klimaszewski being a bit more common, its hard knowing if I'm going in the right direction with such little information. I will definitely see what I can find regarding Ukraine records.

Thanks
