Six Mile House / Crommie Cottage
« on: Wednesday 09 February 11 23:18 GMT (UK) »
The 1901 census says that Robert Bain and his wife Ann Henderson lived at Cromie Cottage (one "m: in Cromie). Their children were listed there in the 1891 census (must have been a transcript on error as the parents were missing from the electronic record).

I couldn't locate Cromie Cottage when searching the internet. Fortunately, I had an opportunity last weekend to visit with my 86 year-old great aunt. She had never heard of Cromie Cottage, but had notes that Robert Bain's home and tailor shop were in Six Mile House in Kingswell. When I searched using that building name I came across a Six Mile House and a Crommie Cottage at Six Mile Fork (two "m"s in Crommie).

I'm not very proficient with Google maps, and couldn't seem to locate either. Can anyone help me
- to understand if these two locations are the same?
- if there is somewhere I can search to identify the history of the building and if there is any existing information on the Bain business located there in the late 1800s and into the 1900s.
- how to get to the building if one is in Aberdeen as I'm planning to visit this summer.

TX in advance for any assistance that can be provided.

Hi Red Mystic.....
Once you master Google maps you will never look back!

I have looked on Google maps and can confirm that both are the same building.

If you go into Google maps and in the title bar type SIX MILE HOUSE ABERDEEN.
This will bring you to a map with the A944 road with an arrow and the letter A. If you look left, that A locates to the text about the location. Now drag the orange icon on to the road near the A arrow and the map will change to a picture of that location. If necessary, rotate the arrows and you will eventually see the solitary cottage, with conservatory on the front and a large car park at the right of the property.

Now do the same and type in CROMMIE COTTAGE ABERDEEN and repeat the process. You will get the same cottage.

Both properties describe their address as Kingswells, Aberdeen, Aberdeen City AB15 8SP

Yes. You are in the right place, just to the west of Aberdeen. If you are visiting the city, a good place to go is the Central Library on Rosemount Viaduct in the city centre. The staff are very helpful and you will find trades directories, valuation rolls, microfilm copies of local newspapers etc. Another useful place is the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History Society in King Street, again in the city centre. They have helpful volunteers and a good collection of resources.

Graham.

They are two different properties - postcode AB15 8SP covers several properties all located close by each other, by the Six Mile Fork. Unfortunately some online maps only indicate one particular property of any given postcode - have noticed this happen on more than one occasion.

TX very much for the clarification.

I have a picture of the old property which doesn't look anything like the the Six Mile House property on Google Maps so I thought the original building / home must have been destroyed. I was a bit disappointed, but given that I live in a part of the world that considers almost all  50 year-old buildings too old to remain standing I was ready to roll with it.

Does this mean that I can't view each of the properties in that postal code on Google Maps or is there a way to zero in on others in the postal code?

TX again for your insight Susanb123. You provided the postal code and then another posting in an unrelated topic in Invernessshire suggested the following website: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/

As I had the postal code from you (TX again for that), I was able to use that on the streetmap site to see that Crommie Cottage and Six Mile House are across the street from one another. The streetmap site doesn't appear to have photos of the properties, but does provide a bit more context than Google Maps did in this situation.

Thought I'd post this in the event others run into the same situation.

If anyone knows of another website that includes pictures of buildings in this area I'd love to hear about it.

Cheers,

Hi again

Glad you found that other map which showed you the locations of the various properties. Google maps is not always easy to zoom in on the correct one as you can see - it usually takes you pretty close but not necessarily the correct property. However, if you go back onto the map as before and locate that red letter "A" - then look slightly westward of the indicated property along the A944 you will see a minor road leading off the main carriageway. At this point you will see a single property on the southern side of the main carriageway (Six Mile House) and a few properties on the northern side on the main carriageway. If you drag the wee orange man onto the map at that point you will be able to see both Six Mile House and Crommie Cottage on opposite sides of the road.

Susan.

That's fantastic. TX to all for your patience (and I do hope to improve at Google Maps).

Now I guess my challenge is to determine if the family lived in Crommie Cottage (as per the 1891 / 1901 census) or if they lived in Six Mile House (as per the notes my great aunt provided).

TX again to all for your help. Jan
