1861 census, Clifton/Bristol, Alexander J. Houston
« on: Monday 18 April 05 08:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Trying to pin down Alexander John Houston, born abt. 1803, Frome.  He served with the 14th Dragoons and was discharged in 1848.  I cannot find him in 1841, but the birth of a daughter in Ireland in about 1840 is a good clue he wasn't in England at the time.  In 1851 he was in Devon working as an innkeeper and classed as a Chelsea Pensioner.
In 1856 he appears in the Post Office Directory of Gloucestershire living at 10 OaKfield Place,  Victoria Park, Clifton, Bristol.  He passed away in 1866, so I am hoping there is a sign of him in Bristol for 1861.

Thanks for any help.

Judy

Hi Judy
This isn't Somerset in 1861. Have you tried Gloucestershire? Where is the guru who moves things when you need him?

Thanks Sue,

Yes I knew it should be Gloucester, but I had noticed several requests and replies to Bristol on this list.  Thought I would give it a try.

The moving guru is probably very busy so I'll just repost in the right place.

Confusion probably arises because 1851 Transcription actually covers Glocs, Bristol, Somerset & Wiltshire. In 1861 only places close to Som border are included eg Hanham, Oldland and Bitton.
Good luck with your search

Thanks again Sue for the information.  Have posted to Gloucester but sadly no response to date.

Judy

If you are still researching this family, have a look at Devon Completed Lookup requests.

I would be interested to know if you have managed to find out who Alexander Houston's parents were?

Best wishes

Hi Phil,

We have communicated before regarding the Houstons of Frome.

Alexander John Houston, baptised 20 Aug. 1903, St. John, Frome, son to Alexander John Houston & Sarah Stokes.  Alexander married Mary White, 29 Jan 1829 at Holy Trinity, Coventry, Wiltshire.

Apparently 10 Oakfield Place, Victoria Park, Clifton, Bristol, where the family resided per the Post Office Directory of Gloucestershire is still there today.  It is about 50 yards from the BBC Bristol office on Whiteladies Road.

Still researching the Houstons and posting my finds on the Frome list.

Best wishes.
