Must thank you all for your advice.  I'm now wireless connected, the laptop has had a MOT and working fine.  When I came home with it as soon as the machine came on I was connected so I had done the right thing beforehand.

I don't know anything about your social circumstances, but nowadays most of the kids arround  are well up on IT matters.
Possibly a friendly chat with a parent could reap rewards.
I myself (a silver surfer) have to rely on my married daughter for information (memory loss?/things lost in time) for here to do in 2minutes what I would have to read up on.
