I think the answer lies in the primary records here.  I will ring the local Mormon church tomorrow evening and speak to the man in charge there.  The lady I spoke to today couldn't help.  Hopefully they still do the film/michofiches that I researched so painstakingly before when I needed out of the area help.  Don't fancy the trip to Leicester Archives!
Pity I'm not closer.

The hours I have spent in Wigston at the records office...if only I had known then, although the Loughboro' records office should have them too.

There is not a chance of me going, it is likley I will not be making that long trip for another year.

Many of those being research seem to be boatmen, so not sure if they were owner/employees so that might depend of if any are in them and many seem to disappear around 1851/61, now they are either dying young or working elsewhere, so I need to do some research on boatmen in that area

I did a little bit of  looking at Harriett's line ( Hannah's sister) and going back I noticed Smith marries into the Dakin line ( Harriet married William Dakin) so it made me wonder if it was the same 'Smith' family

Seriously, I think this is the only way to sort these out, start at say, 1800 and see if I can find Jacob/Susannah marriage, subsequent children baptisms, these should at the very least have dad and mums names, maybe even a few burials along the way, at least the copies if I can get them will be delivered to a place about four miles from where I live.  Should hopefully find Jacobs burial and find out if John died young-ish.  As he is given as Betsey's father on Family Search in 1859 (her birth seems to be registered March 1/4 1858) he must have been alive then. 
Can you confirm we both have the same Susanna on 1851 I have Susanna, widow age 67. son John age 33 and brother-in-law John age 76 all born Castle Donington and living at 27 Clap Gun St.

The Mary on 1861 must be her granddaughter from another family.
The only death I can find remotely in the area is a registration for Dudley in the 1860's.  We shall probably never find this one.
