1799 Dec 14th Kilmadock Peter Ferguson in this parish and Christian Ferguson in Kincardine declared thier purpose of marriage and were married on 27 December.

Christina and Christian seem to have been used interchangeably.

This looks a good candidate for your family in the 1814 census I think Fergie. The childrens ages are all correct - only John has not yet been born! Otherwise all present and corrrect EXCEPT Peter (Christian's husband) is not named. Either "John" is Peter (although I am inclined to think John is Robert the head's brother or unmarried son) and Peter was away somewhere. I have read that at the time the census was taken that a lot of men were away doing seasonal work and hence there are some gaps....  I think John Ferguson and Janet Reid are probably  Christian's parents - the naming pattern fits and on the marriage doc she is said to hail from Kincardine... And if they stuck rigidly to the naming pattern  as they appear to have, then Peters father would be  called Duncan and his mother Catherine... in which case the only candidate  for Peter I can find was born 12 Feb 1776 in Balquhidder to Duncan Ferguson and Catherine Sinclair ...... going by the gaelic form of the name as we would expect - Patric.
This would mean both families originally came down from Balquhidder. Let me know if you are happy with this and I'll see if I can find out exactly where they were in Balquhidder.

Sorry for the delay Val.

I have looked at that family for a long time now and despite their location, I have been unable to get a firm link to my lot.
The only Peter Ferguson who could be my ancestor was living at the east end of the moss at that time.

This is a copy of the notes I wrote some time ago.

This family were living and working at the clearing of the Moss in 1814
They were at plot number 16 ..Drip Moss

Donald Ferguson     Aged    46
Catherine                    “         38

Robert                         “         19
Mary                            “         17
Peter                            “         14
Donald                        “         11
Alexander                   “          9
John                            “          7
Elizabeth                     “          5
Catherine                    “          1

This family vanish after 1814 and it must be assumed that they emigrated.
There is a strong possibility that this is the same  group of Ferguson’s who are named under the heading ‘Parish of Kincardine’ on the passenger list of the brig Sophia that sailed from Greenock in 1818 bound for Quebec, Canada.

If the above Peter is in fact my great great great grandfather then he either went to Canada and then returned, or elected to remain here and moved from Drip Moss to join the Ferguson family at Robertson Lane who were probably relatives.

If they are related to me then Catherine would have to be Donald's second wife.

Cheers.

Fergie,

John McNaughton and Janet Murray were also my ancestors.  I am descended from their son John, who married Elizabeth Buchanan.  They had nine children.  I am happy to share what I have if you would like it.

I have never heard of Janet being interchangeable with Ann.  Ann is usually interchangeable with Agnes.

Hello
I have an ancestor Thomas Ferguson (born approx 1773) from Tombane  who married Anne MacLagan in 1795 Moulin , I wonder if he would be related to your Fergusons also a Donald MacNaughton , a tailor from Fortingall , who married Ann Irvine 1793. It would be interesting to see if there are any links.
Regards
Silvercraig

Achra..Yes I would like to see some of your info.
I can send you my email address via PM.

Silvercraig...It's very unlikely that there is a direct link between your family and mine.

Cheers.
