*COMPLETED* Baptism of Jane AKERMAN in Woodstock
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 03:40 GMT (UK) »
I am interested in the baptism of Jane AKERMAN who was born around 1786 in Woodstock. She may have had a sister Elizabeth. She married William CHARLWOOD in 1817. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,
There are no AKERMAN/ACKERMAN baptisms before 1807 in the OFHS transcription of Woodstock parish register and none listed in the index for Woodstock Union Chapel

Thanks Bev.

I made the assumption that she was born in Woodstock since that is where she was married to William CHARLWOOD. She subsequently lived in Witney (41 Census) and Cheltenham (51 Census). Unfortunately the 51 Census does not give her place of birth (the 41 Census says that she was born in Oxfordshire).

Thanks again

Mark

Hi Mark
Just been looking at this to see if I could help you and do wonder about your 1851 census for Jane in Cheltenham? The one I can see in 1851 does not appear to be the same person as in 1841.
The Cheltenham 1851 Jane is aged 27 a DS at 4 Exeter Place, Cheltenham and thats too young isn't it?

Hi Mark ...

I think I may be able to help you - or possibly confuse matters even further!

An AKERMAN marriage on the OMI (the only likely one in terms of location and time-frame) led me to the Handborough PRs.  Between Woodstock and Handborough is the parish of Blenheim Park, which has no registers.  Here's the marriage:

20 JUL 1783 - Moses AKERMAN & Jane HUNT (both made their mark)

I then found these baptisms:

21 AUG 1785 - AKERMAN (blank), d. Moses & Jane
20 APR 1788 - AKERMAN Rebecca, d. Moses & Jane
18 JUL 1790 - AKERMAN Ann, d. Moses & Jane

I would think it definitely possible that the eldest daughter was named after her mother.

This was the only burial on the registers:

21 JUN 1816 - AKERMAN Rachel, 20, from Blenheim Park, parishioner

There was also this baptism:

27 APR 1726 - AKERMAN George, s. (blank), woman wanderer (perigrinats)

(A "perigrinate" is a person who walks from place to place, usually on foot!)

It's possible that George could be Moses' father, although I can find no marriage for him on the OMI and no burial for him at Handorough.

Hope this is of some use!

Pennie

Thanks Pennie

I had a look on the IGI. They have (C039941) a

30 NOV 1783 Phebe AKERMAN
8 JAN 1792 Charity AKERMAN

both born to Moses and Jane. They list the place of baptism as Combe which, according to Google Maps, is close to the areas you mention. They do not list the baptisms that you found.

I suppose this adds to the confusion since if this is the same Moses and Jane then the daughter born in 1785 is not the eldest daughter.

Thanks again

Mark

You won't find the Handborough BMDs on the IGI, as this parish is not included.

Just on the off chance, I also checked North Leigh (which is adjacent to both Handborough and Combe) - but no      A(C)KERMANs listed.
