G Grandparents with same name
« on: Monday 07 February 11 14:59 GMT (UK) »
I have discovered my maternal G Grandmother Mary Walsh who was born in Kilkenny c1838 married Martin Walsh a jouneyman shoemaker who was the same age, in Liverpool in 1861. Her father was William Walsh. Due to both parties having the same surname I am at a loss how to proceed researching my ancestors. I would be very grateful for any help.

Mary's birth is well before the start of Full Civil records in Ireland (1864), so you would need to check what parish records might be  available. To do this you would need to know the family religion and where in Co. Kilkenny they lived - i.e. parish or townland.

I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm but Walsh is probably the most common name in Kilkenny. I know, I've been searching for Walsh ancestors there for a number of years and just got a breakthrough recently. In the index to Griffith's valuation taken c.1850 there are 1731 Walsh households in Kilkenny & 101 of those are Williams. I'm afraid you will have a very difficult time tracking down the correct one without a lot more information. Have you tried tracking them through UK census records to see if they give a more specific place of birth? What about a marriage cert to get Martin's father's name?
