Leandra - sorry forgot to say that yes, I know about "Papers Past" and it is surely a wonderful resource.  Thank you for mentioning it.
Cheers

Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions and wish to report that my visit to Christchurch Library unearthed some wonderful answers - spent 3 days there and then the earthquake happened so could not go back for more info.  I don't know if those amazing records have survived or not!  Returned to Australia and visited Melbourne and was able to spend time and take lots of photos of the church where George and Mary Ann were married in 1853.  Even viewed the register - but was told that if they had married a year later,  it was necessary to show the names of parents as well which would have been a bonus!  Can't win 'em all! At least I now know where they are buried in Christchurch, and how many children and grandchildren they had.  Thank you again- am so appreciative of the help given.
Regards

Leandra - I'm so relieved about the records - we were 5 weeks around the South, and when we got back to Ch'Ch no one could tell us anything about the Library and of course everything was cordoned off.  I was desperate to find out if the Library had survived but apart from a friend saying he thought it was okay,  there was no official  info! So thanks a million.  It's a goldmine as far as family history is concerned isn't it!
