The 1881 census on Familysearch.org has a William Flynn born in Ireland in 1841 (no place shown) and aged 40.
He is married to Margaret Flynn and he is shown as a labourer. Their address is 84 Picton St ,Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales

It's difficult to do Irish research without a location (parish if not actual townland) and a common surname such as Flynn doesn't help (a bit like looking for a Jones from somewhere in Wales).
It would be worth checking all available census records to see if a more exact place of birth is mentioned- the 1911 census often seems to list an exact place rather than the county of 'Ireland.'
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Bill,

As Aghadowey has said, you have very little chance of tracing his Irish ancestry without some additional information. You need to explore all possible sources in Wales and GB generally to try and find some clues. Check every census in case it says something more than just Ireland as place of birth. Look out also for other Irish people nearby in the censuses. Immigrants often settled near people they knew from home. Check any military records, gravestones, family bibles, wills and obituaries, all of which may reveal his origins or relatives still in Ireland.

Thank You Aghadowey and Elwyn,
the only census I found him on was 1881, 1891, and 1901 he died in 1906 and it said born Ireland.
He married on the 5 Aug 1861 so I thought he should be on the 1861 census
but could not find him.And the 1871 census for flintshire seems to be missing
