Crouch Family of Hastings.
« on: Monday 07 February 11 06:00 GMT (UK) »
At the SOG , in a Crouch file, a hand drawn Pedigree had a John Crouch Abt 1662 ( Herts) Marrying a Sarah Geary ( IGI 1695 All Saints, Hastings). The Ancestors of this  John Crouch were correct back to Abt 1480, and the descendents of, together with half a dozen pages of additional notes, also seem to be correct from info I have found on the web, including that from the 1066 website.
However,  several trees on Rootsweb World Connect project has the spouse of Sarah Geary as  John,  but born later and descended from a Sussex line. The source for all these Trees seems to be the LDS.
I am more inclined to follow the SOG Pedigree.
Firstly the Sussex Crouch families I have seen are Farmers, Ag Labs, carpenters, Butchers and Shoemakers.
The Hastings Crouch line were ' Gentlemen', Jurats, Surgeon, Mayor and connected to Edward Milward, one spouse related to Charles Steevens  3 times mayor of Hastings. In those days there were defining lines between the classes and ' position and money seemed to be it.  The positions of the Crouch family certainly  match those of the Crouch line of Layston,  Hertfordahire, the Layston Church website has much of our combined research into the Crouch family online.
I read through a batch of  Crouch Wills at TNA's  last saturday and have posted the results /notes on Rootsweb ' Crouch' Message Boards.

I am looking for clarificatation /info on John Married to sarah Geary.

Thanks for the reply, I had the Marriage its more 'who' the John Crouch was that is my concern. My thoughts are that if he left a ' Hastings Archdeaconary' Will it might refer to his relatives , parents, siblings , be they Herts or Sussex ones, which would prove his ancestry.
I note one other Tree on Wikki has this Johns grandson Born 8 years before the parents married to fit the equation so to speak,  and then a different spouse and children to those on said SOG Pedigree, the kids being born 'Brede'.
I v can see I am going to have to go back to the SOG and rummage through the Crouch file a bit more.
For the Kent Board on here, someone enquiring about a Matilda Mills nee Crouch, I have listed 2 Wills at least on Rootsweb with her mentioned.

Hi Cliff,

I am researching the Sussex Crouch family as I am descended from the Agricultural line and have got back to Nathaniel Crouch who married Elizabeth Miller in 1782 in Hooe. I have always thought there ought to be a connection to the Hastings Nathaniel Crouchs but have not found one. I was wondering if in your research you had identified any connection or any evidence that the 2 families were unconnected. I am more than happy to pass on anything I have on the family.

Cheers

Trevor

Cliff

First of all thank you for the comments on my 1066 website hosted by rootschat.

I noticed that there are several baptisms of children belonging to John & Sarah here in Hastings recorded in the register of All Saints.
19th Jan 1701 Sarah
14th Jun 1704 Charles
21st Nov 1706 Anne
19th Jan 1708 Richard
7th Apr 1713 Nathaniel
8th Jun 1716 Mary
no other information is given other than son or daughter of John & Sarah

Dont know whether they belong to you or not
