The St Bede's RC Clayton Green registers only begin in 1824 and I think Richard's baptism was at St James Brindle as already suggested. So he was probably C of E. The Gerrards were a Catholic family as far as I have discovered.
However following their marriage at St Bede's I have found the following in the registers.
9th January 1851 St Bede's Baptisms
John Benison son of Richard & Jane bapt. 12th January. Godparents Edward & Ellen Heys.
Death & Burial Register
Jane Benison aged 51 years died 11th March 1869 in Chorley and buried 15th at St Bede's in the old graveyard Southern section Plot No. F 10.
Richard Bennison aged 77 years died 22nd January 1900 in Chorley and buried  25th at St Bede's in the same grave.
Hannah Bennison aged 11 months died 9th December 1899 in Chorley and buried 13th in the above grave.
Peter Bennison aged 6 years died 30th October 1891 in Chorley and buried at St Bede's. No other details.
The Inscription on the gravestone reads as follows:-
Of your charity pray for the soul of John son of Richard and Jane Bennison who died 8th June 1858 aged 7 years. Also of Jane wife of Richard Bennison who died 11th March 1869 aged 51 years.
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for looking this up for me.  This is certainly the right family and you have managed to find a few extra siblings for my GGgrandfather, John Richard Bennison, that I knew nothing about before as they sadly never got to figure on a census.

Most importantly however, you have managed to answer a riddle that I had not even realised was bothering me.  Your identification of the death of Jane, aged 51 in 1869, was a real shock.  I thought I had tracked Richard down living with his wife Jane for at least 20 years following this!  On going back to look closely at the records to make sense of what you found - I realised my error.
Jane clearly had died between the 1861 and 1871 census.  Trouble was that Richard had almost seamlessly married another Jane - and I simply had not realised.
It now makes sense and is quite obvious when I look back.  The ages are different etc - only I never noticed it before - just assumed it was an error or a bit of vanity suddenly at work.....

Anyhow - many many thanks for helping me out before I went any further down a wrong track.

Thanks a million to everyone who has helped with this query.
