Thank you Jim1. I found Hugh and his family on the English 1881 Census. Yes he was the Carlisle engine driver. It was said that Hugh was driving one of the engines involved with the Gretna Green Rail Disaster at Quintinshill. This I have disproved as the disaster was on the 22nd May 1915, GGrandfather Hugh died in 1910 and if he was alive in 1915 he would have been 78 years old, too old to be driving steam engines. Hugh was a crack engine driver in his time and used to drive the "Royal Scot" between Carlisle and London and was invariably chosen to drive the Royal Family (Queen Victoria's) up to Scotland on Vacation to Balmoral and to Glasgow Ship launchings. Thank you also for the date of marriage for Jane Young. I had about 1872 due to the first born John being born in 1863. I Now I am totally confused as a relative in USA a daughter of my grandfathers sister, Shiena, tells me that Hugh come to England as a single man because the first mention of him was in the 1861 census when he was a boarder at 107 South Street Carlisle at age 25 and a train driver even then. He listed as unmarried. He must have sent for JANET or gone up to Dornoch Firth to bring her down. Who is the mother of my Grandfather?? I do have post cards from JANET to her son, my grandfather, that said "Love Mum" This will need more investigation. Once again thanks for the help and look forward to what else you can find. Kindest Regards. Olaf
