Orphanages - Southwark 1901
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 15:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I am trying to find out the whereabouts of my Grandfather and his brothers, I believe they were put into an orphanage between 1901 and 1912ish - when their Mother was no longer able to care for them. All 3 Brothers subsequently joined the Navy. The details I have are as follows:

Mother - Ellen Florence Stamford, on the 1901 census they were living in Camberwell, the children are:
William Gilbert Stamford - b 1896
Christopher Stamford - b 1895
George Frederick Stamford - b 1898

they had another Brother Hebert Harry - b1894, but think he stayed with their Father and did not join the Navy like the other 3 Brothers. So I believe they must have gone into an orphanage in Southwark, Camberwell between 1901 and around 1910. Would be grateful in anyone can provide me with information on how best to research this. Thanks in advance. Anne

Hi

Have you searched for them on the 1911 census?

You cannot request lookups from this census on Rootschat because of copyright law. You must search yourself.

Christopher would be to old to be in an orphanage in 1911 and possibly William.
A free search of the 1911 census shows William G Stamford aged 15 in Holborn registration district. He is an household not an institution. There is a George aged 12 in Bermondsey. He also is in an household. Their naval records will tell you when they enlisted.

If none of them were in an orphanage in 1911 without knowing which orphanage or indeed poor law system they entered it will be hard to find which one as London had quite a few.

Hi - I'm a bit confused because Herbert Harry STAMFORD was baptised in 1894 as a son of Stephen and Elizabeth STAMFORD, and he was with them (as Harry) in 1901.

Hi

Following on from avm228's post, Christopher Herbert was baptised 17th or 19th Feb 1895, at St Stephen, Walworth Common, son of William & Ellen STAMFORD; living 22 Sandover Road; father's occupation: traveller.

Anne, not answering your question, but for further info:

Marriage
St Stephen, Walworth Common
2nd April 1894 after Banns

Herbert William STANFORD, 23, bachelor, traveller, living 11 Silcote Road; father: George STANFORD, traveller
Ellen Florence YATES, 21, spinster, living 64 Bagshot Street; father: William YATES, deceased

Both signed the register, Herbert signed his name STAMFORD, so the curate may have made a mistake

Witnesses: Joseph BRYANT, X his mark
Matthew ?

This would tie up with the birth of Christopher at the beginning of 1895 ie 9 mths after the marriage.

Hi All

Well thanks so much for all the information which all ties up from my perspective. Ellen had another child in 1901 also called Ellen Florence and I believe the marriage with Herbert William then broke up - have not been able to find out what happened to Ellen or the child, but know that the boys joined the Navy and William G married by Grandmother. Just intrigued as to where the boys went before they joined the Navy and what happened to their sister.

Thanks a lot

Anne

Hi

FreeBMD  has a marriage of Ellen F STANFORD Sep. 1/4 1921 St Olave to John G Boone.

Could answer your question of what happened to the sister?
