Immigration from Canada to US
« on: Sunday 06 February 11 14:34 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for a Sarah Rebecca McFee who entered the US in the late 1890s. She lived in New Brunswick. On the 1900/10 census she calls herself Sadie McFee and is in Mass. However, on her marriage certificate she say Sarah Rebecca McFee. I don't know which name she might have used to enter the US. She may have crossed from Maine or come in by ship.
I would be grateful if anyone could help in finding this information.
Thanks
Jennifer

Many thanks. I think this is she. I took a look again at the census and now think it says 1892 and not 8.

Your most welcome.  There were entries for Sadie McPhee but none were transcription errors and I would'nt have thought they could be your Sarah/Sadie.

I have been rethinking this. First she says she came into the US in 1898 and has been there for 2 year(1900). Then on the 1910 census she says she came in in 1888, still Sadie and married to Frank Rogers, whom she married in 1901. That is right and the children are right. Maybe her husband filled in the forms and he made a guess. She now calls herself Sarah on the 1920 census. I know that often dates can be wrong but thought that finding her on an immigration list would clarify this. Maybe she took out citizenship and that would be a further place to look. Maybe she misunderstood the question when asked about coming into the country and she took citizenship in 1888. I don't know but will continue to search.
Thanks
Jennifer

Hello Jennifer,

One thing to bear in mind is Census records can be wrong. They are only as good as the information that is given and the accuracy of the Census taker.  Looking at the marriage record it is written with the other spelling variation that I mentioned - Sarah Rebecca McPhee.

All the immigration dates vary as you say - 1900 is 1898 1910 is 1888 and on the 1920 Census it says she immigrated 1897 and is Naturalized in 1901 - presumably through her marriage to Frank.

The 1888 date looks fictious because she is living with her parents on the 1891 Census for Salisbury. Westmorland. New Brunswick. is she not  ??? Israel McFee and Eliza Ryan.  ???

There are a couple of records under the other version of spelling for Sadie McPhee but the birth date is out slightly. - born 1870 immigrated 1893 and  Sarah McPhee born 1870 immigrated 1898.  Or Miss McPhee born 1873 immigrated 1897. If they gave an occupation of nurse which is what Sadie was in 1900 - it would help but there is nothing specific.  ???

Regards
Sandra

What about the 1898 one?  You would think that she gave her real name when emigrating. The McPhee, McFee spelling doesn't worry me too much.  I don't have her on the 1930 census so don't know what she said there.
