The village of Bullock Smithy understandably prefers its modern name of Hazel Grove....

The Stockport-Buxton line has some of the prettiest-sounding stations I know, even announced over a BR tannoy with local accent:  Middlewood, Furness Vale, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Dove Holes, Whaley Bridge....

And anyone who has hiked around Edale will know Jacob's Ladder!

And how would you have liked to live in Starvation Brow in Wigan, Lancs during the 1880's ??  Boy ! as if it wasn't enough to be poor in those days, they had to rub it in as well !!

Some most unfortunate place names to say the least. But there must be more!!!

In Dorset there is a river Piddle and across the whole county a number of rivers are Ouses. There are many Butts Lanes. Shropshire even has a Crudington.

How many more can we find?

Nice to have a few overseas ideas from Oz, but there are must be far more in the UK. What about Stains? Or Rottingdean in Sussex? Or Dymchurch in Kent? And is Horsham in Sussex misspelt?

I really think some of you could try a bit more!!!!

I used to live near a village in Essex called Ugley, my dad's favourite joke was to enquire after the Ugley Womens Institute.....
