They look like a version of Oxford Bags which came onto the market about 1925 and were popular through the 1930's and were still being worn up to early 1950's apparently.  I've surfed looking for a variety which looks exactly like yours but online pictures are few.

This is an early-mid 1880s photograph and back, and I would suggest prior to 1888 due to the absence of a separate watch chain hole in the waistcoat.

Cheers,

Perhaps if you check for the photographer's name in Dumfries directories it will help you narrow it down to the period when they were in business.

They look more like bell bottoms to me than flares, which I believe were worn by sailors. He doesn't look like a sailor though! ;)

Not sure if this is going to help or not - but this site has a piece about a Thomas A Morrison who changed his name to Moryson in his mid 20s.  He was born in 1856 and was a photographer in Dumfries until 1901 (according to the site).

http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/PP_I/pp_morrison_thomas.htm

So if thall that info was correct it suggests he was operating as a Photographer in Dumfries with the name Moryson from some time after 1876 until about 1901... so a date of 1880s would fit.

...if there info is right that is

No... If you read the whole page, you'll find this:
"Just to let you know that Thomas AA Morrison of Edinburgh was not the same Thomas A Moryson of Dumfries, previously Belfast."
It's a little farther down :)

Hi Roobarb...I did find quite a bit of information on Moryson, and he was in his studio for at least 25 years, and another address for some time more.....but as the card doesn't give an address we're none the wiser :P

If you lighten the bottoms of the trousers up you can see the line of the cloth going down the shin area. It isn't really a bellbottom or flare shape, it's just the way he's standing. Flared trousers were not a civilian fashion at any time during the Victorian age.

Not sure about that... :)

I read it that there were two photographers...one was Thomas A Morrison who became Moryson of Dumfries,  and the other was Thomas AA Morrison of Edinburgh (who was always known as Morrison. (ie two different people)
