Victoria Hospital, Hull (Clarendon st)
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 17:50 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me any more about Victoria Hospital for Children in Hull. I notice a number of people were taken there after the bombing of March 1941 and I can see from Google Earth that the hospital (now a health centre) is all that remains. Was the whole Street demolished in the blitz or demolished afterwards?
Does anyone have any photos to share of the hospital when in use?

kind regards,
Kate

hi katiespitfire.
i am replying to your question about the victoria childrens hospital park street here in hull.
the former hospital is still there exactly as it was, i remember it as i was admitted there as a child
about 1950s for an operation, the only part i know was rebuilt on that side of the road as council houses there now,and further up the road there is older houses. the part that as been demolished is across the road. where st. stephens square was, this is now a new shopping centre which goes through to the centre of the town. i will get my son to get a photograph and i will e mail you it. if this will help.
  my kindest regards...........jean...... :)

Hello Jean, thanks so much. I'm only in Beverley so I'm familiar with the imposing bit on Park St, but this one is on Clarendon St. I wonder if it was a satellite clinic for the main hospital?
I found some wonderful footage on Yorkshire Film Archive online, I'd love to see any photos though!
Kindest regards,
Kate

The site which is now Hull College, (on the corner formed by Park Street/Londsborough Street and Londsborough Street/Clarendom Street)  was bombed, as were the houses on the corner of Londsborough/Clarendon (on the same side of Londsborough as the hospital).  The hospital was only damage and you can still see many of the scars if you visit the rear entrance.

The pictures show the damage to the college as viewed from what is now the car park.  In one you can see the shelter which was built in the yard and saved many lives (the 'square on' view).  Look around the edges of the second and you can see around the building at some of the other properties in the area.

Both images are from www.hull-remembers.co.uk and used with the permission of Hull Daily Mail.
