I am one of the youngsters on this thread then at nearly 29 but am not a kid and will not be called one. I am almost 30. I shall be 30 in July 2012. I dont mind broadcasting a bit of my personal info. Obviously not address or tel no but date of birth and age yes.

Surely in this hobby of family history it is one's mental age that matters -not physical age.  Why should my physical age control the responses I get to any queries I may post, or input I may offer?  I really do not see why I need to know the ages of other rootschatters.  It isn't relevant.

I agree that it is interesting to know where other rootschatters are located, but that could also have a negative impact (if there are any biased chatters - I have not met any).  Without disclosing my age or country of residence I have always received pleasant and helpful replies and response to my postings.

This is such a happy and helpful site - thank you rootschatters.

On Friday I was communicating with an Australian actually about local historic buildings rather than family history.  We had a number of important misunderstandings which were easily sorted out once he had told me that he was in Australia.

It is extremely important to know in which country and preferably in which county a person is located and which is their native country.  I find I need to check this information for many of the replies that I make on this site and sometimes find it difficult if not a little embarrassing when it is not available.

I dont know why you'd find it embarrasing?

FWIW I dont recall having a problem with someone not showing the Country in their profile. If something isnt clear I just ask  ...

It becomes a little embarrassing when I use words or expressions which people living abroad don't understand or when I advise them to visit a records office etc. only to be told that they live at the other end of England.  Surely it is only politeness to include such minimal information in ones profile.

I cant see how politeness comes into it - they are merely excercising a choice in what they can register in their profile?

Surely politeness is thinking about the needs of others and making their life easier!
