Welcome to rootschat.  You will find plenty here.

John was a Royal Marine stationed in Egypt He married Rachel Golubjoz aboard his ship H.M. Monarch in Port Said. They came back to Spennymoor Co Durham. Rachel and John had four children none of them survived. John married Mary Ann Harrison in 1887. I cannot find a death certificate for Rachel.

James Keyland married Sarah Wilson in 1856, Antrim, Irleand.  I am certain the father of James is a William Keyland born about 1811, he married a Elizabeth?  As per census below
8 BALLYMACREVAN TOWNLAND , Ballinderry County Antrim (1851 Census)
WILLIAM KEYLAND, HEAD, M, 40, FARMER, County Antrim,
ELIZABETH KEYLAND, WIFE, M, 36, NONE, County Antrim,
DANIEL KEYLAND, BROTHER, U, 50, FARMER, County Antrim,
ANN KEYLAND, DAUGHTER, U, 8, NONE, County Antrim,
ELIZABETH KEYLAND, DAUGHTER, U, 6, NONE, County Antrim,
JOHN KELLY, Servant, U, 30, PLOUGHMAN, County Antrim,
MARY TIPPING, Servant, U, 26, House Servant, County Antrim,
JOHN HEANEY, Servant, U, 14, COW BOY, County Antrim,

Yes you are right the family disappear during the 1881 census.  Maybe a trip back to Ireland over that period?  It seems as if most of the men of the family were coal miners.  Durham was known for it's mining.

I still can not find out why on earth Sarah Keyland traveled all the way to New Zealand at the age of 15.

Cheers

Hi Suzy,

Just speculating, but with the transcriptions of shipping that I have transcribed, some young ladies, travelled with families with children and was nursemaid to the children on the journey out.

Good thought there KHP.  I have tried looking at shipping lists but nothing has come to light at this time, unless she landed in Wellington or Auckland not Lyttelton?

From memory, sometimes nursemaids or governesses their names weren't mentioned when travelling with a family e.g.

Mr & Mrs Blah, 4 children and nursemaid.

Which is a pity, as that doesn't help genealogists to find their ancestor.  Don't forget that the clerk at the time, wrote the name down how it sounded to his ear.

Well that may explain a bit then.
Her ITM has her as being in Rangiora only 17 days, but I guess that does not mean anything apart from that she went to live near her intended husband.  Then again he was only there 3 days?
Will stroll over the U.K census again today to find anymore clues.

Cheers

Gemini63.  I have found James Keyland and his wife Sarah living in England during the 1861 Census.
The home address is 24 George Street, Whitworth, Durham.  Their first son Daniel was nine months old at the time, he later died, and another son Daniel was named after him.
James is working as a Pittman, I presume this a job in the coal mines.
So looks as if the family settled in England sooner than what I thought.

There also seems to be a number of Keylands that have moved to Canada and the U.S.A from Ireland

Hi Suzy,

It seems like the Irish populated most of the world following the potato famine - although they were at it before too.

Sarah & James possibly came to Durham to set up home, find work etc, before collecting the other children. Of course, baby Daniel would need to be with his Mum.
Durham, at that time would have had plenty of work in the mines and low cost housing.

As I said, Sarah Agnes could have been born on the trip back to collect the older children.

Regarding John Keylands 1st wife, I had presumed she'd died in childbirth  but couldn't find a record of her death but when I found the passenger lists for Mrs R Keyland travelling between Port Said and England in 1910 & 1920, it made me wonder.
Maybe she left and returned home to Egypt.

I'm researching my husbands tree, he's the "Keyland". He comes via Johns eldest surviving son, Joseph.

Thanks for the information, re: William Keyland, I had wondered if there was a link.
There's also a James, aged 53 - (living with his mother, Mary aged 99) in the same area, in 1851. Mary would have been too old to be the mother of William and Daniel,  though she could have been the Grandmother, making James the uncle.

Irish families are such a problem.

Dawn

As you will see the census says Mary is the mother of James

11 BALLYMACREVAN TOWNLAND , Ballinderry County Antrim (1851)
JAMES KEYLAND, HEAD, U, 53, FARMER, County Antrim,
MARY KEYLAND, MOTHER, W, 99, NONE, County Antrim,
HUGH ILLEGIBLE, Servant, M, 0, PLOUGHMAN, County Antrim,
ROBERT ILLEGIBLE, Servant, M, 30, Servant, County Antrim,
HENRY MCCAMLEY, Servant, U, 18, COW BOY, County Antrim,
CATHERINE MCMANUS, Servant, U, 18, House Servant, County Antrim,

Not too certain who James married but he had a daughter named Sarah abt 1829.

Possible brothers to James and William are Daniel abt 1801, and Charles abt 1800.  Daniel seems to be a name that is carried down to other family members.

William Keyland married Elizabeth?
Possible children.
Sarah
Helena
Henry married Jane Money (children Elizabeth 1857, James 1864 William Henry 1870)
Charles
William abt 1830
Ann abt 1843
Elizabeth abt 1845
and our James who married Sarah Wilson.

I know what you mean about Irish families ::)

hi
Sarah Keyland may be hard to find as to when she arrived because my auntie  has said she traveled  on someone elses ticket. Also the possible reason for her coming was that Sarah and Ellen Jane McCrory the wife of Joseph Hickland
were friends
