OK - Yes she was born In Colne 1858 & her father Issac was a Hatter, mother Mary Pollard
I've got: 1861 Census reside Colne, 1881 un married still living with parents - this does seem to be the most likely person Residence Acrington or 1881 Colne (married to James Ashworth Delaney. Named as Mary A. Delaney.
1901 Census Married to James Ashworth Delaney living in Cheshire?

Too be a bit cheeky, Can any one shed some light on Mary Alice Catlow who did marry James Ashworth Delaney? It's her side of the family Father was John & lived in Cheshire Hyde & Accrington area. I'm only asking out of curiosity & to help another person - who I think will be joining very shortly.

They married in 1879 so have you checked them out on the 1881 census to get her birthyear and birthplace

The 1881 Census has Mary Alice Catlow b abt 1858 hence my confusion. Born in Accrington Lancs.

James A Delaney, with wife Mary A Delaney (bn Accrington) is on 1881 at
RG11 4144 39 23

(also an Ashworth visitor in the H/H, and a Catlow nephew too)

so the one you have found in 1881 is not the Mary that married John Delaney.

Hello I am the one the poster is trying to help.
My GG grandmother is Mary Alice Catlow married 1879 to James Ashworth Delaney, on her weddding cert it says her father is John a Blacksmith, but I cannot find anything at all about her before her marriage.
Mary was born in 1858 Accrington area.
I have reached a total dead end, any help would be appreciated.

1871 has 2 Mary A Catlows of right age bn Accrington

one is with parents and dad is called Doctor Catlow (name not profession) he is a flagger and slater

interestingly next door is an Ashworth family who also have a child called Doctor!

The other is with mum Alice who is now married to Ellis North, she is described as his step daughter, as well as other Catlow siblings.
Interestingly they have an Ashworth lodger!

Now I wonder if Dad, Alice first husband and Mary's father, was John a blacksmith?
