Samuel NEVITT - Penninah BOSSON
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 09:47 GMT (UK) »
My grandaunt Penninah BOSSON married Sam NEVITT. Sam's father on the marriage certificate is James NEVITT. Does anyone know if  this is the same James NEVITT would was killed in a pit accident in 1915?

Hi Cliff,

Welcome to Rootschat.

On the marriage certificate did it say what James's occupation was.  The James Nevitt killed in the Minnie Pit Explosion Hamer End on the 17th January 1915 was a blacksmith working at the mine aged 37.  I could be wrong but the dates don't seem to add up if his son was married to Penninah in the April May June quarter of 1908.

Age taken from this link.

Hi Cathy,
The occupation on the certificate is "miner" and as you say the age does not seen right.
Thanks for setting me right.
Cheers

Hi Cathy,
The informaton you gave me corrisponds with the Nevitt family associated with Penninah.
On the wedding certificate Samuel's address is Chesterton and his father James is a joiner.
The witness were Penninah's brother & sister.
The Samuel Nevitt born 1882 also fits in.
Recently I found information on Stanley Nevitt (Samuel & Penninah's son) who emigrated to Australia where I now live.
Thanks once again.
Cheers

Hi Cliff

The James Nevitt who died in the Minnie Pit disaster in 1915 was my grandmother's eldest brother. Their father was also called James and he was a colliery carpenter. James was one of ten children, six daughters and four sons. I remember meeting James' brother Albert back in the 1950s. I have a lot of information about the family if you are interested. The census entry you quoted is the right family. What else would you like to know?

Best wishes

Hi Cathy
There is a photo of a memorial postcard to the men who died in the 1915 Minnie Pit explosion on this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,354315.0.html

And just for you - a photo of Samuel and Penninah on their wedding day. More flesh on the bones of this thread :)

I also have images of the mourning card for both these brothers - very poignant pictures - one brother aged 37 and the other 38.

Best wishes
