The PALING family of Houghton on the Hill are descended from a John PAYLING b. 1769, who marr an Eliz. CLARKE in Houghton in 1804.  I don't know where John came from but I don't think he was born in Houghton.  I think he was the son of Robert PAYLING & Mary DICKINS who were marr in Thurmaston in 1767.  Mary might have died in childbirth and Robert might have married again but I cannot confirm this.

John & Elizabeth had 3 sons, Samuel c 1804 from who I am descended, Robert c 1805 who probably had no children and John c 1809 who later added the middle name Dickins from his grandmother's surname.  John Dickens is buried in the churchyard at Houghton with his wife Sarah RUSSELL.

I have an extensive family tree noting over 500 family members.

John PAYLING's eldest son Samuel c 1804 marr Eliz WATTS from Ashby Folville in 1827.  They had 7 children,
John c 1828
Eliza c 1830
Elizabeth c 1834
Samuel c 1834
Mary c 1837
Thomas c 1839 (my gt grandfather)
Jane b 1842

Samuel marr Caroline COLEMAN from Glooston in 1857.  He moved to Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, c 1880, where he kept The White Hart Inn until his death in 1884.

My father John PALING b 1910 in Wigston remembers being sent to spend his school holidays at The White Hart in Ollerton in 1920s where he was looked after by his aunt Elizabeth, widow of Samuel's eldest son, Alfred.
