Im having  difficulty locating where a street called sowerby street was in carlisle, its mentioned on a death cert 1856 but i cant seem to find it on maps etc of the time.

Does any body know where this may have been

Thanks.
Have taken a "Street View" tour and seen the development between Portland Place and Tait St.
The other side of the road still has at least one link to 1873 - The Cumberland Arms. Two doors up is The William Rufus - think this was the Albert Hotel in '73.

Have also checked the 1868 Ordnance Survey map and can identify Botchergate but insufficient detail to pick out the streets running off.

Thanks again - the map ties in beautifully with the Directory.
Both the map and the Directory record "The Jovial Butcher Public House" - a cut above "The Jolly Butcher" methinks
