Swillington/Colton Mill
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 09:29 GMT (UK) »
Have found pictures of the present mill but would like any further information either on the Mill or family Horsfield residents c. 1851. I have the 1851 census.
Many thanks

Hi,
My name is Claire Barraclough.
Swillington Mill aka Colton Mill, was later re-named by the locals as "Barracloughs Mill" (stated on the colton village website.
My great grandparents John & Gertrude Barraclough lived at and worked this mill, jointly with John Barracloughs brother.
My grandma and her brother & sister were brought up at the mill.
It laid derelict for many years and I believe became a listed building around 1970.
I believe it is now a harvester restaurant/pub.
Regards
Claire

Hi Claire,

My line of interest in the Green family who were farmers in Yorkshire & Cambridge during C17 to C20. My (David Green husband of Cari Green)  Gt Gt Grandfather James Green had a sister Jane, who married a William Horsfield. I have found them on the 1851 & 1861 census at Swillington as a Corn Miller with his death in 1868 and a will of under £6,000 in value. Jane died in 1874 and is buried at Hulmpton in the far east of Yorkshire quite near Spun Head  where she was born and not with her husband. William was born at Swillington but I'm not sure if that means it was at the Mill.

I have found reference via English Heritage to the property being Grade 11 listed in 1970 and photographs showing its poor state of repair. It was in use in 1931 and rebuilt in 2006.  It was known as Colton Mill, Swillington Steam Corn Mill and latterly Barraclough's.  I visited the site in 2011 and its now a private dwelling that was for sale at 650k. Its address is now The Windmill, Colton LS195 9AL, it sits rather incongruously in more of an industrial estate.
Do the dates that the Barracloughs were in occupation fit with my dates? I have some photographs, some downloaded from the internet + some taken on my visit - let me know if you would like copies. My e-mail is davidwgreen1@aol.com

Kind regards

David W Green
