Help please
« on: Wednesday 02 February 11 05:11 GMT (UK) »
I have been given a birth for one of my ancestors which says the place of birth is Cousleigh, Co Kilkenny, but for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere.
Is is the right county or has the name been translated wrong on something somewhere?
Can anyone help please
Kind regards
Bev

You can check place names in Ireland on the townland database at www.thecore.com/seanruad

The closest name to Cousleigh that I see listed in Co. Kilkenny is possibly Courstown..  I dont see anywhere listed as Cousleigh in any county.

Do you have the place name on a document like a census ?
Maybe a small image extract might help, in case anyone can offer an alternative interpretation ..

Hi Shane
I got it from someone else, but have been trying to confirm it ever since and so far I cannot reconcile the date of death given me to anything here on the BMD's pioneer site in Perth WA.
Will keep trying so I can purchase a certificate and see what it really is.
Thank you for confirming that it isn't a place name and I will keep in mind the town of Courstown.
This is really how things can go wrong without confirmation isn't it?
Kind regards
Bev

Have you tried looking in places like 1901/1911 census and Griffith's Valuation to see where the surname might be found? of course with a very common surname this probably won't work but might be worth a try
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Aghadowey,
Unfortunately the surname is Carroll, but on my grandmother's death certificate her father was shown as O'Carroll.
I am beginning to suspect that the person shown as born in 'Cousleigh' is one that someone has found a date for on the BMD;s pioneer index and used it, but will follow it up next week.
Just thought - another way is that he arrived in WA as a 'pensioner guard' in 1850 and I may be able to get some information if I delve into that as well.
Kind regards
Bev

I have an ancestor named Patrick Carroll that is listed as being from Cousleigh in county Kilkenny. We might be related whoever said they were a Carroll. It’s likely a small town in Ireland too.

Coorleagh?

Added later

Link Paulstown RC parish registers. Some are very difficult to read, but Coorleigh (which may be a variation in spelling) occurs in them.

Census link shows a Mary Carroll in this household at Coorleagh.

In the 1911 census the townland is spelt Coorleigh.
