Marie-

In my excitement, I forgot to mention that I have some photos of the Newlands grounds taken in 1976, and some others taken in 1991.  I'll try to find and scan them, and will post them here or send them to you.

Google for Newland Avenue Hull in Google Maps;
Use Google Street View to 'stand' on Cottingham Road at the top of Newland Avenue facing away from Newland Ave.
What you see is the Children's Home.

If you look at the area on the Google satellite view the road to the right of the homes is  'The Trees',  built on the site of the bus garage in the last 10-15 years.  Auckland Avenue, to the left, was the other boundary of the homes grounds.  I would guess that the homes have not lost much of their grounds yet.

There is a large building in the bottom left hand corner of the grounds which is (was ?) the swimming baths where I too learned to swim.

Hello I attended the Newland Orphanage school for a short time (wasnt an orphan) they took children living close by.  I was there about a year in 1959/1960, then went onto Endike lane School. My aunt was a house mother at Newlands Homes -. Do you remember the Whitsunday Carnival, my father had the Toy Stall as he had a toy wholesale business in Blundells Blds. Also Bonfire night was always a great event. I have a particular interest in the orphanage on Spring Bank the Hull Seamans and General orphanage as my father was there 6 yrs from 1912-1918. I emigrated to NZ in 1973. Good luck with your research. Has anyone been to the new Hull History centre? regards KiwiJane

If you are able to access the Hull History Centre, this is the file they hold for the Orphanage.. No idea if it holds
records of children that lived at the home/s, but would be worth looking at in any case.

The Records of the Hull Seamens and General Orphanage   C DSHO
Hull Sailors Home, 1856-1944  DBHM/16/48  1944
Hull History Centre (Hull City Archives)

I think after 1944 the records are held by the Hull Social Services Dept, which if you contact them you should be
able to ask for access to them.

Hi Marie my name is Derek Price I was at Newlands in the 50s about 56 I think,there for two years with my brother Chris our house principles were the Moxon family,it was not my idea of heaven  but it set me up for life being independant that is, I can only remember photo`s when the rugby league cup was brought to the homes my brother and Kenneth Moxon[the son] were chosen to parade it.If there is any other facts you need myself or my brother may be able to help. All the best Derek [now living in east sussex]
