information on newlands orphanage in hull
« on: Tuesday 01 February 11 14:06 GMT (UK) »
hello,
This is my first post - still not sure what i am doing but here goes!

I am looking for anyone who has any information or photographs of  the seamans orphanage called Newlands in Hull in the 1950's. I was placed there for a short time with 3 of my siblings after our father died and our mother was pregnant with her 10th child and could not take care of us.  we were only there for a few weeks but would love some info or photies if anyone has any of either. I can remember the place quite well - it was lovely and we were well taken care of.

many thanks

Marie

well here goes!!! :)

Hi Marie

Welcome to Rootschat.  Quite a few people on here have a connection to Newlands, either themselves or their ancestors.  Go to this thread

www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,268058.0.html

you might be able to find someone who can help you.

Lizzie

ps.  I have photos, but they were taken at the beginning of the 1900s, so way too early for you and your siblings.

Hi Lizzie,

I am looking for photies of the place itself - so it doesnt really matter what year. just need to see the layout of the school, swimming baths, wash-house and playground etc.

I would love copies of your photies if that is possible.

Kindest regards

Marie

Oh my! I can't believe it!  In the middle of this film, there is a segment showing "current residents", including the boys' band.  My dad was in the band and would have been about 9 or 10 at the time.  It's only a couple of seconds long, but there is a child who looks just like my sister did at that age, so it could be him!  As I mentioned on another thread, we have no pictures of him between the ages of 3 and 18 so this is really exciting.  I'll have to get him to see if he can spot himself.  At any rate, he'll probably know the other kids.

This site is so wonderful!  Thank you!
