Complete beginner, needing help please!
« on: Monday 31 January 11 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I would dearly love to find out more information about my dad's family - he is 79 now and doesn't really remember much about them.  I've never done anything like this before and am a little worried about getting carried away spending too much money for no results.

Anyway, my hairdresser told me about this fantastic site, so I thought I'd give it a try and here I am  :D

My dad's name is John Ernest Storry and his parents were Ernest and Violet Storry (nee Francis).  They lived in Chelmsford, Essex.  That's about as much as I know! Is that enough to find anything?

I'd be so grateful for any info/help/advice!
Thanks
Kellie

Here's your grandparents Marriage Index entry - you may need to order a certificate to show their ages & Fathers names

Marriages Jun 1928

FRANCIS  Violet to STORRY  Chelmsford  4a 1513
FRENCH  Ada  LESTER  Chelmsford  4a 1513
Lester  George S E  French  Chelmsford  4a 1513
Storry  Ernest H to Francis  Chelmsford  4a 1513

this looks like Ernest's Birth Index entry

Births Jun 1906

Storry  Ernest Handley    Chelmsford  4a 711

and Violet's - BUT, there are multiple candidates born in Essex overall, altho the majority have more than one forename ... this does look good tho being 'of an age' and CHELMSFORD

Births Dec 1905

Francis  Violet     Chelmsford  4a 664

Order Certs online here (£9.25) using the info shown in the quoted Index entries - http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You should be able to find Ernest on the 1911 census, hopefully with his parents and any older siblings!

We are unable to do look ups on 1911, but you can buy a few credits on the site to enable you to have a look at the actual entry, if you do locate it.
If you then post the detials here, we might be able to spot them in earlier censuses.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Based on the Year and place, I'd say this was Ernest's parents marriage - verifiable via Ernest's Marriage Papers, his own Birth Cert or the -1911- census.

Marriages Dec 1901

Bacon  Agnes Mary A    Chelmsford  4a 942
Bateman  Florence Edith     Chelmsford  4a 942
Janes  Thomas Arthur     Chelmsford  4a 942
Storry  Willie     Chelmsford  4a 942

As the Index page has both couples, you'd need Ernest's Birth Cert or the -1911- census to verify who married who or whom  ;)  Pity its just after the 1901 census or that would have clinched things ...

Looking at the 1901, and allowing for mis-transcritions of the name, there's a Willie STOREY lodging in Springfield, Great Baddow / Chelmsford area.

RG13/Piece: 1674 Folio: 14 Page: 19

He is a bricklayer and was born c1877 in Cambs, Wisbeach. Lodging with a BACON family

Looking at other STORRY births in Chelmsford from 1901 to 1911 I'd be tempted to think that Willie married Agnes M A Bacon ... probably a relation of the people he stayed with in the 1901 census.

Anyways, starting to guess now - so over to you  :)
