Pembroke Place, CHATHAM, in 1871
« on: Monday 31 January 11 09:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find Pembroke Place in the 1871 census of Chatham. Can anyone help, please?

In 1861 it can be found through an address search on FindMyPast, but not in later censuses. I have an ancestor living there in 1874 so it was still in existence. It was off New Road.

Many thanks

Saying it is off New Road does not help much since that road runs right through Chatham.

Looking at the Descriptions of the 1871 Districts there is no mention of Pembroke Place but I think it may have been in District 17 whuch is described as below but the sheets shown (in Ancestry) obviously are not complete. Whether the sheets have been lost altogether or are just missing in Ancestry you can probably find out.

Chatham, Rochester Distict 17

All that part of the Parish of Chatham lying on the South Side of the middle of the High Street from Railway Street to where the same joins the boundry of Chatham Intra and St Margaret St Margaret Parish along such boundry to the middle of the New Road - along the middle of such Road to Railway Street along the middle of such Street to the High Street at the point first described including Hammond Hill, Milton Terrace the Houses on the West side of Railway Street and the Houses in Chapel Lane which are in Chatham Extra.

I commenced No. 1 Milton Terrace along New Road to West side of Railway St along the High St including Dans Alley Hammond Hill to Chapel Steps and Chapel Lane.

Only 2 sheets
Schedule nos 75 and 76 cover 2 & 1 Hammond Pl.
Schedule 112 to 117 covers some of Chapel Steps.

If you use the Advanced search on FindMyPast and put in Chatham for the town/village it lists all the streets. Pembroke Place is listed as "New Road Pembroke Place".
