Sussex FH Society--how do you log in?
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 18:25 GMT (UK) »
I am having problem logging in. I am a member --I know the user and password but where do you put it?THere seems nowhere to enter this to be able to see member sites only. It used to be straightforward but now it seems you need to fill in name and membership number and e-0mail and wait a couple of days . How do you get immediate access using the 2 passwords that have been sent to you.
Am I thick or????

I agree that it is as clear as mud!  I think you go to members only pages - on the left hand side of the home page - then click whichever index you want to look at and go to "click here for online" database.  When it comes up there are two boxes on the left for user name and password.  However I can't get that far today so maybe there is a problem with the site?

Not straightforward, is it?

I've just tried Home/Accessing the Member's Only Pages/Member's Interests (right hand side)/
Clicking on a Surname link brought up the Authentication box.

Perhaps they didn't put it on the Home page as it isn't needed for some searches?

'Hat.

The signing in box is there, but getting onto the right page to find it is a major problem.
Even when you do, the two boxes are rediculously small, so they are very easy to miss.

I used to chair the Brighton meetings of the SFHG so I will pass your concerns on to those in charge of the site.
Hopefully they can do something to make the directions for members to find the signing in box far more obvious.

Hi All

I am a member.I could sign in on Members Interest but the SFGH Data Archive at Frontis,Baptisum & Burials seems to be "Down"

I sadly spend a lot of time there ;D & i think Frontis goes down when its being Updated

Hope that makes sense

The member only data is in two places - on the SFHG site and in the Data Archive on the Frontis site.

On the website you are prompted for username and password if you try to access the data (it's a standard Windows protected directory).  On the Frontis site there are boxes on the left for username and password.

Some users are familiar with paid sites and expect to find a login box on our website.  There isn't one.   But if you go to www.sfhg.org.uk the home page has a table with topic headings.  The first one is

About LOGIN

and a little further down is

Accessing the MEMBERS ONLY pages

The text on the first of these pages is
-----------------------------------------------------
Login - using the username/password

Recently a couple of new members have been searching for somewhere to login, and have overlooked the link Accessing the Members Only pages.

In brief, there is no specific login covering all of our data. Some is on this site and if you go to one of the pages you will be prompted for the username and password. Our Data Archive is hosted at the Frontis website where you can enter the username and password in the boxes on the left.

For more about the data see Accessing the Members Only pages.
-------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure how I can make it more obvious but if you have suggestions please email the webmaster.

Alan

Some technical observations.

As one post noted, most of the information on the SFHG site is not restricted.  Some is in a restricted directory and Windows is implemented in such a way that if you attempt to access that data the browser will prompt you for  username/password.   That is not our design, it's the way it is.

Providing a login box on the home page would mean saving the input until and in case a browser prompt needs it, intercepting the browser prompt and somehow passing the username/password to the browser at that time.  It may be technically possible but its development would need software skills that commercial companies have in their IT departments and charities run by volunteers normally do not.

I looked at this area some time ago, checking with some other societies.   One uses the Joomla! website software which can provide a login box  but even this would not allow linkage to Frontis without development work.  And Joomla! does not seem suitable for large parts of our website.

There will be differences between commercial family history sites and those run by volunteers for family history societies.

Hello. I have just joined the Sussex FHS and am quite confused about the set-up of the page. I sent off a request for password quoting the membership number but received an error message.  Also, is it possible to obtain an article which appeared in the quarterly publication in 2007? That is what I am really interested in and I found the article listed at Family Search.

thanks!
