Hi all,
Does anyone know anything about Nigg Camp please. My friend has a letter that was sent to her Grandparents from a nephew(John Burns) who was in Nigg Camp in 1915. He wrote the very interesting letter on the eve before he was off to France, we think with the Black Watch  (not sure though)

and contains the following info:
"Later in the war another gun battery was built on part of the golf course. Known as Nigg Camp it never appeared
to serve much useful purpose and latterly was used for Italian and German prisoners of war working on the land,
as well as being manned by Norwegians at some point. One of the gun emplacements was sited on top of the
foundations of Dunskaith Castle, proving the strategic value of the spot chosen by William the Lion about seven
hundred years earlier. Four holes of the golf course were lost to this camp, the beginning of the end for golf in Nigg."

The 1st /4th Bn Seaforth Highlanders were at camp on the eve of going to war when the news broke they were assembled back in Dingwall prior to going to Inverness (Fort George) then onto Bedford left Dingwall 5th August and left Bedford for the front on 5th Novemeber 1914.

They had started a first draft of 2/4th Bn Seaforth and Highlanders reserve.
