John / Joseph STEVENS Launceston c1830

I wonder if some kind soul could help with my brick wall ?

My  2 x Great grandfather states that he was born In Launceston Circa 1830.
However he keeps changing his name on documents between John & Joseph.
This makes it hard to progress back any further without going to the local records office, I am unable to do so at this moment in time ( I am in Westest Wales) I just wondered if anyone out in the ether would be able to help.

Do you have a copy of his marriage cert showing his fathers name and occupation?  It may then be possible to identify him on the 1841 census

The only Stevens I can find in 1861 b Launceston is John b 1846

Where is your John/Joseph in 1841/51 and when and where did he marry

Can't seem to find the blighter in 41 / 51 anywhere 

He married  Mary Ann PARFITT

June 18th 1868  In St woolos Parish Church, Newport, Monmouthshire

His occupation is listed as Porter

Witnesses  James PEARD....... Mary CECIL

Have you found him in 1871/81 - I can't see any match for the profile given - birthyear 1830 and Launceston

EDIT - just found him in 1871 - in lodgings

John Stevens aged 40

Hi Carole,

I've got him in the 71,81 & 91 in Newport Monmouthshire
In these he gives his name as John

1896 he is on his sons marriage cert as John Occ Cab proprietor.

Does the 1868 marriage cert show him as a bachelor - he was about 38 which was a bit old in those days for a first marriage?

Is his age reasonably consistent with an 1830 (ish) birthyear on later censuses and on his death reg

The 1851 on Ancestry is not working properly at the moment

It's telling me that there were 1,405 entries for the surname Stev** in Cornwall and is displaying all the entries.

However - but when I try to narrow it to males - apparently they were in the minority - only 10 show - yeah!!!!!

Marriage cert does show him as a Bachelor but lists his age as full  ( argggg)
