That's certainly the marriage, well done! BUT ... is this the James that Nemasis was originally asking about? His James was born in 1830, this marriage is 1841 - something doesn't fit! Nemasis, how certain are you about James' age?

I think the James Legge that married Martha Norton was baptised in Kempsford in 1818, the son of James and Hannah. The James that Nemesis is looking for was born around 1830 - he was baptised in Lechlade in 1829, parents Thomas and Mary. So, it looks as though this is not the right birth certificate! Can you direct us to your James in a census, Nemesis, so we have more info to go on?

scuda-j: I'm not sure of James' age. I got 1830 from a later census (and it would fit with William's birth in 1854). I have found James Legg in the 1881 and 1891 census but these show a marriage and move to Brize Norton so may not be the correct James!

OK, got them in 1861, James & Mariam, presumably Mary Ann, in Bampton, Oxfordshire - this could be the James Leg & Mary Ann Morse marriage. Children William 6, Sarah A 3, Mary M 1.

I am sure you have got the wrong birth for William - or rather, you need to be certain which family you are following before you go any further. What facts are you CERTAIN relate to the family you are researching?

William Legg married to Elizabeth and living in Birmingham in 1891 is aged 37 and born in Kempsford. He is a police constable.

William Legge born in Bampton has also married an Elizabeth by 1891 and is living in Oxford. He also says he is 37, and is a corn porter.

You need to decide whether you are tracing William born in Bampton or William b in Kempsford. William b Kempsford is the one who married Elizabeth and lived in Birmingham in 1891 (he was a police constable). If that is who you want I think you have the correct birth certificate. The William born in Bampton also married an Elizabeth, and in 1891 they are in Oxford - he is a corn porter.

If you're certain you definitely need the William in Birmingham, I would say you have the correct birth certificate, so those parents are the ones to research not the James born in 1830.

Oh, beat me to it, Galium!

Thanks all - definately the Police Constable in Birmingham! The 1901 & 1911 census go on to confirm the rest of the family as known.
